Understanding The Army WCAP Women's Wrestling System

Bruce Robinson is the head women's wrestling coach for the Army's World Class Athlete Program. He explains the unit's philosophy and program's goals and relationship with college programs below.

The United States Army World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) is an official Army unit dedicated to developing Soldier-athletes to represent the United States at the highest levels of international competition, including World Championships and the Olympic Games.

WCAP provides elite athletes the opportunity to serve their country while continuing to train and compete at a world-class level. The program is centered on discipline, leadership, and long-term athlete development, ensuring that participants are prepared both as competitors and as representatives of the United States Army.

Any WCAP athlete who competes at the collegiate level does so in full compliance with all applicable NCAA rules and institutional requirements. These athletes must meet the same eligibility standards, academic expectations, and participation guidelines as any other student-athlete. There are no exceptions or special provisions granted through WCAP; compliance remains a top priority.

The relationship between WCAP athletes and collegiate programs, including McKendree University, reflects a shared commitment to athlete development. McKendree has built a world-class women’s wrestling program through outstanding coaching, effective recruiting, and a strong focus on athlete development. Their success is a direct result of the culture and system they have established.

WCAP does not replace or drive that success; it complements it. The alignment between WCAP and collegiate programs like McKendree creates an environment where athletes can continue to grow both academically and athletically while pursuing international excellence. This model is not about creating a competitive advantage, but about providing a structured and sustainable pathway for elite athletes.

Ultimately, success in this space comes from alignment, not advantage. It is the combination of strong collegiate programs, committed athletes, and high-performance training environments that allows individuals to reach their full potential.

Importantly, WCAP’s mission extends beyond any single program or institution. The primary objective is to strengthen Team USA by supporting athletes who will compete on the world stage. By providing a sustainable pathway for elite athletes, particularly in women’s wrestling, WCAP helps ensure that top talent remains in the sport longer, continues to develop, and contributes to the United States success internationally.

The U.S. Army is proud of the character, commitment, and service demonstrated by WCAP athletes. These individuals represent something greater than themselves every time they step on the mat as Soldiers, as competitors, and as ambassadors of the United States.
