WE ARE: Cael's First Decade (Trailer)

Penn State wrestling’s championship history spans generations, but the program’s modern rise under Cael Sanderson has pushed it into a new tier of NCAA success.

The Nittany Lions won their first NCAA team title in 1953, then returned to the top in 2011 and have since built one of the sport’s defining dynasties.

Penn State has won NCAA team championships in 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, giving the program 13 team national titles. The 2025 team added another historic chapter, scoring a record 177.0 points and placing 10 All-Americans in the top six.

Individually, Penn State’s champions stretch from Howard Johnston in 1935 to Carter Starocci and Mitchell Mesenbrink in 2025. The program now has 61 individual NCAA champions, with 40 of those coming under Sanderson.

Starocci’s 2025 title made him the first five-time NCAA champion in collegiate wrestling history.

Here's a complete look at Penn State's NCAA Championships history.
