Team Race

Iowa and McKendree are the front-runners, with North Central giving chase. These three teams qualified 10 wrestlers each and have combined to win every National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championship since the tournament started in 2020. This is the first sanctioned NCAA women’s wrestling tournament, so history is on the line for these three teams.

The Hawkeyes have won the past two national championships and are anchored by returning champions Kennedy Blades (160) and Kylie Welker (180).

Both have dominated everyone domestically and are among the best wrestlers in the world. Blades is a 2024 Olympic silver medalist and 2025 World bronze medalist, and Welker won bronze at the past two World Championships. Iowa is expecting big points here.

Clarissa Chun will rely on fresh faces from a season ago to win this year’s title. Val Solorio (103) and Nyla Valencia (110) weren’t on the 2025 postseason roster, but both have earned their spots and are key pieces. Brianna Gonzalez (117) was a 2024 national finalist, and Reese Larramendy (145) was a 2024 national champion. All-Americans Cali Leng (124), Lilly Luft (138), and Katja Osteen (207) join newcomer Karlee Brooks (131).

McKendree is riding high after a perfect regional championship with all 10 wrestlers winning titles, including five falls in the finals. Top-seeded Cam Guerin (131) is seeking her fifth college national title, after winning NCWWC titles from 2021-24. The Bearcats have four top seeds — the most of any team in the tournament.

Alexio Garcia’s squad has plenty of firepower, highlighted by Guerin, returning champion Tristan Kelly (207), and returning finalists Gabby Tedesco (110), Shelby Moore (124), and Haylie Jaffe (138). Yu Sakamoto (117) was a 2024 U23 World champion for Japan.

Although one match won’t determine a team title, keep an eye out for the opening match between Leng and Moore at 124 pounds. Moore holds a 2-0 college record, but this is big for both teams as they work through the rounds.

North Central won the 2026 NWCA National Duals with a 23-21 win over Iowa and a 21-18 victory over McKendree in the finals. The Cardinals don’t have the same tournament power as Iowa and McKendree, but have a shot at the title with the right tournament.

Joe Norton needs returning national champions Maddie Avila (103) and Claire DiCugno (138) to have big tournaments, and returning finalists Kaelani Shufeldt (110), Sara Sterner (124), Yele Aycock (131), and Bella Mir (145) to have even bigger tournaments. North Central has a history of proving the doubters wrong, but it will take everyone wrestling at or above their seeds to make it happen.

Grand Valley State, Presbyterian, Sacred Heart, Lehigh, and Wartburg will be in the top four (trophy contention). The Mountain Hawks only sent five wrestlers to nationals, but have three stars who can place in the top three.

Below are seeds for Iowa, McKendree, and North Central.

Weight-by-Weight Preview

103 Pounds
This weight had a complete overhaul from last season due to graduation, retirements, and roster turnover.

Otterbein’s Olivia Shore won this weight last year and still had eligibility, but announced her retirement late in the season. McKendree’s Gabby Tedecso moved up to 110 after reaching the finals. Iowa’s Rianne Murphy and Sterling Dias finished third and fourth, but Val Solorio earned the spot during the season.

The only returning All-Americans from 2025 at this weight are Avila (7th) and Mia Zuniga (8th), who transferred from King to Colorado Mesa.

McKendree’s Heather Crull is the top seed after pinning second-seeded Solorio at the For Her Duals on February 8 in a competitive match. This could make for a thrilling final if Iowa and McKendree are in a heated team race.

Rayana Sahagun was an All-American for Jamestown before transferring to Grand Valley State, and could be a factor in the team race if she hits Crull in the semis.

Returning All-Americans: Maddie Avila (North Central), Rayana Sahagun (Grand Valley State), Mia Zuniga (Colorado Mesa), Aaliyah Payne-Parris (Sacred Heart), Trinity Pendergrass (Quincy), and Genesis Ramirez (Aurora).

110 Pounds
Audrey Jimenez leads the field based on season results and international credentials. The Lehigh freshman made the 2025 U.S. Senior World Team at 50 kg (110 pounds) and is a six-time age-level World medalist. She has won every college match by fall or tech, and only two matches went longer than a period.

Returning national champion Sage Mortimer will have something to say if these two reach the finals. She spent most of the season at 117, but dropped down for regionals, where she defeated returning national finalist Kaelani Shufeldt (North Central), 11-8, in the finals. Mortimer is never out of a match and is one of the most entertaining wrestlers in the field.

The potential quarterfinal match between Gabby Tedesco (McKendree) and Nyla Valencia (Iowa) is intriguing because of the tight team race. These two met in the Missouri Valley Open finals, with Tedesco pulling out a late 4-3 victory. Valencia was injured during the last two seasons and earned the spot over two returning national champions on her team.

Returning All-Americans: Gabby Tedesco (McKendree), Kaelani Shufeldt (North Central), Emily Mendez (William Jewell), Avery Kibelbek (King), Sage Mortimer (Grand Valley State)

117 Pounds
There are no returning national champions here, but it might be the deepest weight in the field. McKendree’s Yu Sakamoto is seeded first after finishing third last season. She fell to second-seeded Karissa Turnwall (Emmanuel) in the quarters, then defeated her in the consolation finals. A lot has to happen for these two to meet in the finals.

Riley Rayome (North Central) and Abbi Cooper (Lehigh) will have their say after stellar freshman campaigns. Alex Waitsman (William Jewell) and Brianna Gonzalez (Iowa) could meet in the quarterfinals in a rematch of the For Her Duals won by Waitsman, 10-7. These two trained at the same club and were coached by William Jewell head coach Desiree Ramos. Gonzalez is a 2024 national finalist and a 2025 US Open champion.

Returning All-Americans: Yu Sakamoto (McKendree), Brianna Gonzalez (Iowa), Icart Galumette (Delaware State), Alex Waitsman (William Jewell), Shea Reisel (Dubuque), Carleight Czerneski (Adrian), Dianna Pineda (Alfred State)

124 Pounds
No returning national champions here, but there are four returning finalists. Sara Sterner (North Central) is a three-time All-American who reached the 131-pound finals last year. She has a monster headlock and an arm throw, and is dangerous from the tie.

King’s Virginia Foard spent part of the season at 131, but is back down to her preferred weight, where she finished second in 2024, then redshirted in 2025. Quincy’s Xochitl Mota-Pettis is a 2023 US Open who finished second at the 2025 NAIA Championships for Missouri Valley. Her electrifying style and explosive throws should keep everyone at Xtream Arena on the edge of their seats.

McKendree’s Shelby Moore finished second at nationals last year and has been at the top of her game late in the season. She will factor heavily into McKendree’s drive toward a team championship.

Returning All-Americans: Sara Sterner (North Central), Alyssa Mahan (Presbyterian), Aspen Blasko (Grand Valley State), Cali Leng (Iowa), Shelby Moore (McKendree), Xochitl Mota-Pettis (Quincy), Lorianna Piestewa (Colorado Mesa), Virginia Foard (King)

131 Pounds
This weight doesn’t have the most returning All-Americans, but there are plenty of intriguing storylines. McKendree’s Cam Guerin is attempting to become a five-time national champion. Standing in her way is Aurora’s Lexi Janiak, a 2025 national champion when Guerin missed the season due to injury.

Janiak is a two-time age-level World medalist with wins over Guerin as a freshman. These two met in the 2023 finals, with Guerin winning her third title.

Aubre Kraszer (Lehigh) is seeded second after an undefeated freshman campaign. She has a 5-1 win over Janiak at the Midlands during Janiak’s first competition of the season. Freshman Karlee Brooks (Iowa) has losses to Krazer and Guerin but has wins over returning All-Americans Aspen Blasko (Grand Valley State) and Yele Aycock (North Central).

Returning All-Americans: Cam Guerin (McKendree), Lexi Janiak (Aurora), Yele Aycock (North Central, Cassia Zammit (West Liberty)

138 Pounds
Katie Lange (Grand Valley State) won titles in 2023 and 2025 and is seeking to close out her college career as a three-time national champion. She defeated North Central’s Claire DiGugno, a 2024 national champion when Lange redshirted, in the regional finals to earn the top seed.

McKendree’s Haylie Jaffe fell to Lange, 10-0, in the 2025 national finals, but posted a 2-1 win over Lange during their most recent meeting. DiCugno has a 5-4 win over Jaffe, giving her the two-seed.

Iowa’s Lilly Luft earned her roster spot late in the season and could meet Lange in the semis if they make it that far. Jaclyn Dehney (New England) is a pinning machine with a nasty bar arm.

Returning All-Americans: Katie Lange (Grand Valley State), Carina Giangeruso (Presbyterian), Lilly Luft (Iowa), Haylie Jaffe (McKendree), Jaclyn Dehney (New England), Kylie Rule (Wartburg), Ragan Retell (East Stroudsburg), Claire DiCugno (North Central)

145 Pounds
Will we get Reese Larramendy (Iowa) vs Bella Mir (North Central) round three? These two met in the 2025 national semifinals, with Mir winning with a late takedown to secure a spot in the 145-pound finals. Larramendy got one back at the National Duals to tie the series. Mir started her career at Iowa, so these two former teammates and friends could meet in the finals, or in the consolations if neither makes it that far.

Elmira’s Zoey Lints is a headlocking machine and is dangerous for any opponent she faces.

Presbyterian’s Maddie Kubicki could face Larramendy in the quarterfinals, and the match was close the last time they met. Kubicki is an age-level World teamer and should be taken seriously.

McKendree’s Alex Szkotnicki started the season at 131, wrestled four matches at 138, and won regionals at 145. She is a returning third-place finisher who will have her say on which team wins the national tournament.

Returning All-Americans: Reese Larramendy (Iowa), Nichole Moore (Fort Hays State), Maddie Kubicki (Presbyterian), Alex Szkotnicki (McKendree), Alissa Caltagirone (Northern Michigan), Zoey Lints (Elmira), Liv Wieber (Simon Fraser), Bella Mir (North Central)

160 Pounds
Iowa’s Kennedy Blades is the returning national champion, and she will likely ignite the partisan crowd with her monster throws. She is the overwhelming favorite here, but there are points to be had for McKendree, North Central, Presbyterian, Grand Valley State, and Sacred Heart.

Savannah Gomez is seeded second, and a deep run will help McKendree’s cause. East Stroudsburg’s Tiffani Baublitz has finished 7th, 3rd, and 3rd at nationals, and would like to cap her college career with a spot in the finals. North Central’s Taylor Graveman could hit Baublitz in the quarters, so key on that match if it happens.

Dubuque’s Alex Hofrichter and Simpson’s Keeley Kehrli have met eight times during their college careers, but are on opposite sides of the brackets.

Returning All-Americans: Kennedy Blades (Iowa), Vida Beckel (Emmanuel), May Cuyler (Presbyterian), Love Daley (Sacred Heart), Stella Steigler (King), Tiffany Baublitz (East Stroudsburg), Taylor Graveman (North Central), Savannah Gomez (McKendree)

180 Pounds
It’s Kylie Welker and everyone else. The returning two-time national champion is the class of the field and might be the best wrestler in the tournament. The bottom half could feature a regional finals rematch between Destiny Rodriguez (McKendree) and Isabella Renfro (Fort Hays State). The two split matches during the season, with Rodriguez securing a fall during the last outing. The Bearcats need Rodriguez to make a deep run.

North Central’s Shenita Lawson will face Welker in the semis if both make it that far. Lawson won a big match at the National Duals when she closed out the dual against McKendree at 207, but is staying at her preferred weight of 180.

Returning All-Americans: Kylie Welker (Iowa), Azariah Moore (Lock Haven), Shenita Lawson (North Central), Journey Land (Mount Olive)

207 Pounds
Tristan Kelly (McKendree) is the returning national champion after finishing third at nationals twice. Sabrina Nauss (Grand Valley State) finished second to Welker at 180 in 2025 and fell to Kelly during a dual 4-4 late in the season.

North Central’s Caroline Ward earned her spot in a crowded and deep room, as did Iowa’s Katja Osteen. Osteen could get a conference finals rematch against Wartburg’s Rewa Chebabo in the national quarterfinals. Chebabo won 4-0, but Osteen outpaced returning four-time national finalist Jaycee Foeller to make the team.

Colorado’s Jayleen Sekona is a three-time All-American seeking to earn four podium finishes.

Returning All-Americans: Tristan Kelly (McKendree), Maria Aiono (Presbyterian), Esther Peters (Chadron), Jayleen Sekona (Colorado Mesa), Sabrina Nauss (Grand Valley State).
