Inclement weather has been terrorizing the Northeast this month, so the athletes headed to the 2026 Rhode Island Interscholastic League Wrestling State Championship will have to wait an extra day for a chance to become one of this year’s champions.

The event originally was slated to take place Feb. 27-28, but the schedule was shifted to Feb. 28-March 1. A recent blizzard in the area also affected the state basketball championship.

The 2026 wrestling state titles will be decided at the Providence Career and Technical Academy in Providence, Rhode Island, and all of the action will be broadcast live on FloWrestling and the FloSports app.

The structure for high school wrestling in Rhode Island includes two categories (coed and girls) and three divisions – Division 1 (14 teams), Division 2 (11 teams) and Division 3 (12 teams).

As far as the ramp up to the state tournament, the Division 2/3 Championship was held Feb. 7, followed by state qualifying tournaments on Feb. 21.

The top 10 individuals in each weight class at each of the two one-day Combined Qualifying Tournaments (Red/Green) have advanced to the state championship. The qualifying events included teams from all three divisions.

Here’s a look at how the brackets are put together using the results from the Red and Green qualifying tournaments: RIIL Wrestling Preset Bracket

In 2025, 28 individuals claimed state titles in Providence, while Ponaganset won the coed title for the third consecutive time. The squad was led by Jared Hood, who won the 126-pound weight class to become a four-time state champion.

Scituate edged North Providence for the girls team title, the state’s first.

What Else Is On The Line This Week?

The top three boys and top two girls in each weight class will advance to the New England Interscholastic Wrestling Championships at the Providence Career and Technical Academy on March 7-8.

The event includes standout performers from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

This year’s New England Wrestling Championships will be the 61st edition of the event, and the weekend will include the third annual Girls’ New England Championship.

Did You Know: Rhode Island Was The 44th State To Add Girls Wrestling

The RIIL offered girls wrestling weight classes (12) for the first time during the 2023-2024 winter sports season, with female wrestling integrated into the dual meet schedule and in-state tournaments that existed at the time.

From the initial year of girls-only wrestling at the state tournament, the top performers also were able to earn entry into the annual New England Championships.

At the time, Rhode Island was one of the 44 states offering sanctioned high school wrestling for girls.

The inaugural girls state event featured 31 participants, though three weight classes only had one wrestler.

In 2025, the event had 50 competitors, and there was a battle for the title in all 12 weight classes. Scituate edged North Providence for the team title.
