High school wrestling in Massachusetts is split into three divisions – Division 1, Division 2 and Division 3 – and competition within each is divided into mixed-gender and girls-only competition.
In order to reach the divisional round, teams had to battle their way through sectional events Feb. 14. Each division included four sectionals, with the top performers advancing to the Divisional States on Feb. 20-21, where they were placed into 16-person brackets.
From each Divisional State Tournament, the top five finishers in every weight class qualified for All-States, which also will use 16-person brackets. The three Divisional state champions get seeded first, second and third.
To determine who will take the final spot in the bracket, the sixth-place finishers from each divisional meet are ranked using the standard criteria, and the highest-ranked wrestler will be the No. 16 seed at the all-state event. The other two will be the first and second alternates.
Female wrestlers, who qualify, were allowed to compete in the mixed-gender sectional tournament. If they were eliminated during sectionals, they could compete in the Girls’ Divisional State Tournament.
If a female wrestler qualified for the Mixed Gender Divisional State Tournament and chose to compete, she automatically qualified for the Girls’ All-State Tournament. If she opted to compete in the Girls’ Divisional State Tournament, a spot at Girls’ All-States must have been earned via performance.
