Two weeks ago, the wrestling spotlight in South Dakota belonged to the teams at the 2026 South Dakota High School Activities Association Team Dual Wrestling Championships, but now it’s time for the focus to shift to individual glory.

The next crop of South Dakota wrestling state champions will be determined Feb. 26-28 at the 2026 SDHSAA Individual Wrestling Championships, being held at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

All of the competition for the Class A and Class B (boys) and girls, will be broadcast live on FloWrestling and the FloSports app.

For wrestling, the members schools of the SDHSAA on the boys side are divided into the two classifications – Class A (33 schools) and Class B (66 schools) – with each further divided into four regions.

The girls only have one 98-team classification, which also is divided into four regions. Two have 27 schools, and the other two have 22.

Each region is responsible for conducting its own championship event, with four athletes from each weight class advancing to the state meet.

Did You Know: SDHSAA Girls Wrestling Could See A Second Five-Time Champion

The SDHSAA introduced the girls-only division for wrestling during the 2020-2021 season.

Pierre T.F. Riggs has won every team title in the girls division, while Canton has been the runner-up all four years so far.

Individually, Peyton Hellmann from Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon became a South Dakota wrestling legend when she won her fifth consecutive individual state title last March to become the state first five-time state champ in girls wrestling. She even overcame a torn ACL late in her high school career.

Harrisburg’s Regina Stoeser owns four states titles (2022-2025) and will have a chance to earn a fifth in 2026.

Boys wrestling in South Dakota crowned its first state champions in 1960 and rolled with a single classification until 1971.

Amazingly, there are two six-time Class B individual state champions in SDHSAA history. Kirk Wallman won each year from 1984-1989, and Logan Storley matched the feat from 2006-2011. Four other wrestlers own five titles.
