Did You Know: OSSAA Wrestling Is Closing In On A Century Of Tradition
The first year the Oklahoma High School Wrestling Championships was held under the eye of the OSSAA was 1934, and until 1947, only individual champions and medalists were recognized. The first team trophy was awarded in 1947.
The growth and evolution of boys wrestling in Oklahoma has seen it go from one classification and 10 weight classes to now four classifications (1978) and 14 weight classes (1996), the most recent steps in the progress of the sport.
The first official girls state wrestling tournament took place in 2021 after an experimental edition in 2020.
On the boys side, Perry is the far-and-away leader in team titles with 43, though the program’s last win came in 2019. Reigning Class 4A champion Tuttle is second on the list with 22 wins.
Oklahoma also runs a dual state championship, and has since 1989. The winners in the 2026 edition on Feb. 14 were Stillwater (6A), Coweta (5A), Tuttle (4A) and Blackwell (3A).
