Once you’re on the mat and wrestling for a high school state championship, the scene is the same no matter what state you’re from, and the prestige that comes with a victory is undeniable. 

How you get there and how the divisions/classifications are structured, however, varies from place to place.

The good news is, that by the time you’re reading this story, all you need to know is that it’s time for the 2026 South Carolina High School League Wrestling State Championships, and all of the action Feb. 20-21 will be broadcast live on FloWrestling and the FloSports app. 

The weekend will feature the 2026 SCHSL Girls Wrestling State Championships and the 2026 SCHSL Boys Wrestling State Championships, and everything will be happening at the Florence Center in Florence, South Carolina.

This will be the second straight year the 10,000-seat venue is playing host after a move from Anderson, South Carolina, and it will be the third time the boys and girls will share the stage.

Competition in South Carolina is split into five classifications for the boys (5A (Division I, Division 2), 4A, 3A, 2A/1A) and now two divisions for the girls. 

Recent changes led to the introduction of 5A Division 1 and 5A Division 2 for the boys in 2025 and Class 5A and 4A for the girls this year. 

The popularity and growth of girls wrestling in South Carolina also led to the inaugural dual state championship for the girls in 2025. That title was won by the Rock Hill girls. 

The previous two seasons, also won by Rock Hill, the team title was determined by points at the individual state event.

The former has been true for the boys for many years. The team champion each year is decided at the SCHSL Duals State Wrestling Championships.

Hence, February has been nonstop for the competitors as they've continued the journey to this year’s state titles.

The regular season for high school wrestling ended Jan. 30, and the postseason festivities kicked off with the SCHSL Duals State Wrestling Championships on Feb. 7 (girls) and Feb. 11 (boys), followed by the individual Upper and Lower State Wrestling Tournaments on Feb. 14-15.

To even reach the Upper and Lower events, teams and athletes needed to maintain momentum through the regular season and regional competition.

Each region in Class 5A, Class 4A and Class 3A must qualify/determine four competitors in each weight class for the Upper and Lower State Individual Tournaments, where 16-person double-elimination brackets are used to determine the eight wrestlers in each weight class who move on to the state championships.

The smaller schools are allowed to enter one competitor in each weight class directly into the Upper and Lower qualifying events, where double-elimination competition again decides who reaches the state meet.  

For the girls, teams are able to enter two wrestlers per weight class into the Upper and Lower events, with the top four finishers moving on to the individual state tournament. 

At the state championships, the No. 1 qualifier from the Upper State event will be paired against the No. 8 seed from the Lower State competition, and so on.

Saturday, Feb. 21 

• 9 a.m. – Gates open
• 9 a.m. – Round 2 Consolation for boys; Consolation Quarterfinals for girls
• 11 a.m. – Consolation Quarterfinals for boys
• Noon – Consolation Semifinals for all classifications

There are four wrestlers in South Carolina high school wrestling history who have won four individual state championships and four team titles:

• 3A – Corbin Martin, Eastside (2005-2008)
• 3A – J.C. Oddo, Eastside (2004-2007)
