While the collegiate wrestling season is winding down, we’re still more than a month away from seeing if the Penn State Nittany Lions can win their fifth consecutive national championship and 12th since 2011.

Before PSU steals the wrestling spotlight in the Quaker State, let’s let the top high school wrestlers in Pennsylvania remain the center of attention for a little bit longer.

The student-athletes in the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League recently wrapped up their team championships and individual sectional competition, so that means it’s time to face the next hurdle in the high school postseason – the WPIAL Boys’ Wrestling Individual Championships.

The action will take place across two classifications (2A and 3A) and two locations, but both events will be broadcast live Feb. 20-21 on FloWrestling and the FloSports app.

Crowning all of the 2026 WPIAL wrestling champions has taken some time.

The postseason journey began Jan. 26 with the preliminary round of the team championship for the boys, which concluded live on FloWrestling on Jan. 31.

Sectional competition for the boys was held at various locations Feb. 15.

Now, the 2026 WPIAL Boys’ Wrestling Individual Championships will see the standout Class 2A wrestlers head to Chartiers Valley High School in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania, while the 3A boys will face off at Canon-McMillan High School in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania.

And, while the girls didn’t have their own team event, they also will be on the mats Feb. 21 for the WPIAL Girls’ Wrestling Individual Championships at Mount Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh.

From the WPIAL Championships, the year’s top performers will move on to the PIAA regional competition, set for the weekend of Feb. 27-28.

For the 2A boys, the top eight wrestlers in each weight class will get to compete at the PIAA Class 2A Southwest Regional, with the top seven there moving on to the PIAA Individual Championships

In Class 3A, it will be the top seven from the WPIAL event advancing to the PIAA Class 3A West Regional, with only five competitors in each weight class moving on to the PIAA Individual Championships.

Finally, in the girls division, five or six wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the PIAA West Regional, and the last four standing in each weight class will get to compete for state titles.

The 2026 PIAA Boys & Girls Individual State Wrestling Championships will take place March 5-7.

When Was The 2026 WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Wrestling Team Championships?

Schools in the two classifications – Class 3A and Class 2A – qualified for the 2026 WPIAL Team Championships by finishing among the top two teams in their respective sections or by earning a wildcard selection, made by the sport’s steering committee.

The titles were decided Jan. 31 at AHN Arena on the campus of Peters Township High School in McMurray, Pennsylvania.

In Class 3A, Franklin Regional successfully defended its 2025 crown by defeating Norwin in the title tilt, 31-27.

It was Franklin Regional’s fourth win overall and second time the program has picked up back-to-back victories (2014, 2015, 2025, 2026).

In Class 2A, Derry earned some redemption and denied Burrell another three-peat.

Burrell edged Derry in 2025, but Derry responded in convincing fashion, taking the latest title by a 37-13 final score. It was the first championship for Derry after runner-up finishes in 2007, 2018 and 2025.

Burrell won 15 straight times from 2007-2021 and then reclaimed the top spot in 2024 and 2025.

Did You Know: The WPIAL Is Closing In On 100 Years Of Activity

The first WPIAL champions were crowned in 1936, and the 2025-2026 season is the 91st year of competition.

Canon-McMillian owns the most titles in WPIAL history with 22. Waynesburg Central and Burrell are close behind with 21 and 19, respectively. No other program has won more than nine times.

On the girls side, the 2023-2024 was the introduction of girls wrestling to the WPIAL championship landscape.

Five girls have won WPIAL championships during both seasons of action, while Norwin High School of North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, leads all schools with five individual titles over the two seasons.
