Over the three days at the Tacoma Dome, one of the world’s largest wood-domed structures at 530 feet in diameter and 152 feet tall, teams and individuals will have a chance to defend, or define, their legacies, as boys and girls champions are determined in Class 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A and 1B/2B (largest to smallest).
The 2025 edition of the WIAA State Wrestling Mat Classic didn’t disappoint, with one of the highlights being a 1B/2B showdown between powerhouses Tonasket and Okanogan. The title went to Tonasket by a slim margin of 276.5-273.5, giving Tonasket a win for the second consecutive year.
The 2A meet was a landslide, with Orting getting six individual winners (two of whom won their fourth state titles) on the way to the team victory, its fourth consecutive. The Cardinals won by 117 points over Toppenish, which also had a four-time champion, its first.
There now are 21 four-time winners in Washington. The 2025 additions to the list were Alan Salguero (Orting), Quentin Harding (Orting) and Kiyanno Zuniga (Toppenish).
On the 2A girls side, Toppenish got some redemption by claiming the title ahead of Othello, 273.5-221.5. It was the fourth consecutive team state title for the Toppenish girls.
In the 1A action, the Wapato boys took the top spot ahead of Zillah, 300.5-235, despite not having any individual winners.
The 2B/1A/1B girls race also was a nailbiter, with Granger edging Royal, 184-181.5.
In the larger classifications, it was the Kelso girls taking the 3A title over Peninsula (217.5-210) and Richland winning the 4A meet over Sumner (180-158.5). Peninsula was the 4A champion in 2024 before the addition of the extra classifications in 2025.
For the boys, Tahoma was able to hold off Mead to repeat for the 4A crown, while White River broke a late tie to get past Hermiston, 252-242.5.

The first year Washington crowned state champions in wrestling was 1953. Until 1968, there was only one classification. Then two. A third was added in 1972. The fourth came in 1998. Since 2007, there have been five classifications for the boys.
Moses Lake has claimed 18 team state titles, with the first coming in 1959, and the most recent taking place in 2015. Three other schools have won 11 times.
The first year for the girls at the state championships was the 2006-2007 season with a single classification, until a second was added for the 2022-2023 campaign. The growth continued two years later when the field expanded to four classifications for the girls.
The Sedro Woolley and Toppenish girls each have earned four team championships.
Six girls already have become four-time individual state champions, while 17 more have won three times.
