There’s more than just the temperature heating up in Arizona, as the top male and female high school wrestlers continue working their way toward their respective state tournaments.

The 2025-2026 Arizona Interscholastic Association wrestling season is set to come to a close Feb. 19-21 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix.

The 2026 AIA Wrestling State Championships will see state champions determined in two girls divisions and four divisions for the boys.

While the action won’t be broadcast live on FloWrestling or the FloSports app, each match will appear in the FloWrestling archives minutes after concluding.

The first hurdle standing between the athletes and a state title is sectional competition.

For the girls, sectional action is slated for Feb. 7 at four locations (Section I-IV) in each of the two divisions (Division I, Division II).

The boys will have one more week to prepare, as their sectional meets won’t happen until Feb. 14. Each of their four divisions (Division I-IV) also will have four sectional events/locations.

At the sectional meets, there’s a plaque for each team champion and medals for the final four competitors in each weight class – 12 for the girls and 14 for the boys.

From each boys sectional tournament, four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the state event, where they’ll be seeded into 16-person brackets. The girls state tournament also will feature 16-person brackets for each weight class.

The first year of championship-level wrestling for the girls was the 2020-2021 season, and the state tournament featured just one classification for its first three editions. Division II was added for the 2023-2024 campaign.

Liberty has been the dominant program, winning in 2021, 2023 and 2024 (Division I).

The first state event for the boys took place in 1953.

Veterans Memorial Coliseum, part of the expansive Arizona Exposition & State Fair, has seating for more than 14,500 wrestling fans and has become the regular home of the state championships.

In 2025, the Sunnyside boys cruised to the Division I team title, outdistancing Liberty 244.5-178.5. It was the eighth consecutive state championship for Sunnyside across two divisions and the team’s record-extending 38 win overall, with the first coming in 1979.

The Division II title was a sizable blowout, with defending champion Canyon View winning by almost 120 points.

Division III also had a repeat winner, as Sahuarita bested ALA-Gilbert North 250.5-155 to win for the fourth straight year and fourth time overall.

The Division IV race was a bit lopsided, too, with Santa Cruz Valley winning by 63 points. It was the team’s eighth win overall and first since 2020.

On the girls side, Sunnyside was able to complete the sweep by outlasting Liberty, which was in search of its fourth title since the debut of the girls state tournament in 2021. Sunnyside was the Division I runner-up in 2023 and 2024.

The second year of two-division competition ended with Mica Mountain atop the Division II standings ahead of Snowflake.

As you get settled in for the new championship season, here’s everything you need to know about the 2026 AIA Wrestling State Championships, including links to the brackets.

Did You Know: Sunnyside High School Rules Arizona Wrestling

Sunnyside High School of Tucson, Arizona, has been the far-and-away best wrestling program in Arizona.

The Blue Devils swept the team titles at the 2025 AIA Wrestling State Championships (boys and girls).

The boys win was the team’s 38 title overall, with the first coming in 1979. The victory also was the squad’s eighth in a row – 2018 (Division I), 2019 (Division II), 2020 (Division II), 2021 (Division I), 2022-2025 (Division I). Holbrook and Winslow are tied for second place all-time with 11 team state championships.

On the way to last year’s trophy, the Sunnyside boys claimed four individual titles.

The Sunnyside girls didn’t have any individual winners, but the collective effort was enough to earn the team its first state championship after finishing as the Division I runner-up in 2023 and 2024.

The first Arizona state champion in boys wrestling was determined in 1953, while the girls battled for their first trophy in 2021.
