For anyone doing some research to prepare for the 2026 UIL Texas State Wrestling Tournament, you’ll see that despite a history that began in the 1960s, the state event didn’t fall under the UIL umbrella until the 1998-1999 season.
Multiple organizations help build the foundation, and the UIL has kept the sport thriving for another three decades.
The UIL is the governing body for all public high school athletics and has its own storied history that began in 1910 and has adapted and evolved for over a century as the world itself has changed and evolved.
In UIL wrestling, there are two divisions for high school boys and two divisions for high school girls, Class 5A and 6A, though Texas actually is home to six conferences – 1A-6A (smallest to largest). In wrestling, Conference 4A, 3A, 2A, and 1A schools compete for full honors in Conference 5A.
The weight classes for high school wrestling Texas are:
- Boys: 106, 113, 120, 126, 132, 138, 144, 150, 157, 165, 175, 190, 215, 285
- Girls: 100, 107, 114, 120, 126, 132, 138, 145, 152, 165, 185, 235
At the state tournament, each weight class features 16 athletes, with awards going to first through sixth place. Individual performances along the way help teams accumulate points for the team standings.
Since 2005, the top four finishers at the district meet move on to regional competition, and the top four placers at the regional meets advance to the state tournament.
The UIL Texas State Tournament has only been held in four locations since 1999. Since 2016, the meet has found a home at The Berry Center.
In 2025, the race to the boys 6A team title couldn’t have been any closer, as Allen edged Arlington Martin by a single point, 159-158. Conroe Woodlands College Park was third with 118.5 points.
The 5A standings offered a little more breathing room to Canyon Randall, which outdistanced Cedar Park, 139.5-83.5. Amarillo Tascosa was third with 77.5 points.
The girls side in 2025 saw two runaway victories.
El Paso Eastwood cruised to the 6A championship with 130 points, besting Conroe Woodlands College Park (96) and Katy (85).
Lubbock Cooper got the job done in 5A with 110.5 points and was followed by Dumas (80) and Azle (71.5).

Did You Know: High School Wrestling In Texas Has A Layered History
The first official year of UIL competition for wrestling was the 1998-1999 campaign, with the first state champions being crowned in 1999.
Through 2012, only Conference 5A competed in the state tournament. The following season saw the addition of Conference 4A, followed by 6A in 2015, which results in the current two-classification format featuring 5A and 6A.
Since the transition to UIL governance for the 1999 state meet, five boys have won four state titles, though the first four-peat wasn’t completed until 2012.
On the team side, Allen owns the most state championships with 15, followed by Canyon Randall with eight.
For the girls, four athletes have won four state titles, with the first accomplishing the feat in 2011.
Amarillo Caprock owns the most girls team championships with 11. El Paso Hanks is second with six.
