11 Pennsylvania High School Wrestling Standouts Who Shined Last Weekend

We saw a huge weekend of results for Pennsylvania High School wrestling at both the Mid-Winter Mayhem and Doc Buchanan. The Mid-Winter Mayhem is an incredible tournament held on the campus of IUP every year, where some of the top AA and AAA schools in Pennsylvania battle it out, and Doc Buchanan has established itself as one of the top in-season wrestling tournaments in the country. Check out the top performers, who kicked off 2026 for the Keystone State.

Kooper Deputy (FR) - Chestnut Ridge, 107 pounds

The top-ranked wrestler in the country at the lightest weight class backed up his Powerade title performance with a Mid-Winter Mayhem title. Along the way, the freshman picked up six falls, five of which came in the first period, including a pin against returning state qualifier Michael Johnson in the finals while leading 8-1. Deputy is off to a 26-0 start with 21 falls this season and is the clear favorite to win a AA state title this season at 107 pounds and join the exclusive group of Pennsylvania freshman state champions.

Dominick Morrison (JR) - Hatboro-Horsham, 121 pounds

After a fifth-place finish at Beast of the East last month, Dominick Morrison went on an incredible run this past weekend to a Mid-Winter Mayhem title at 121 pounds. Morrison came in as the #4 seed and defeated 2025 U17 World Champion Keegan Bassett in a 10-9 battle in the quarterfinals. Morrison followed that win up with a 4-1 sudden-victory win over returning PIAA and Fargo runner-up #12 Matteo Gallegos in the semifinals to set up a title matchup with another returning PIAA runner-up, #18 Brayden Wenrich. Morrison trailed 1-0 heading into the third before picking up an escape, takedown, and four near-fall points for the 8-1 win and his second straight Mid-Winter Mayhem title. Morrison, a 2024 state champion as a freshman, has put himself in a good position to win his second AAA state championship this season.

Dominic Deputy (SR) - Chestnut Ridge, 127 pounds

Returning PIAA champion and NC State commit Dominic Deputy took a tough 2-1 loss in tiebreakers to Max Dinges in the semifinals of Powerade a few weeks back before coming back to finish third. Since then, #14 Deputy has gone on a tear, going 14-0 with 11 bonus-point wins, including a 13-3 major decision over Dinges in the finals of the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference on Jan. 3. Deputy joined his younger brother, Kooper, last weekend with a Mid-Winter Mayhem title at 127 pounds. Along the way, Depurty picked up four falls and two decisions, including a 4-1 victory in the finals over two-time PIAA medalist and Lehigh commit Emilio Albanese. Deputy looks more dominant than ever and is in the driver's seat to close his career out with a second straight PIAA title.

Freddy Bachmann (SO) - Faith Christian Academy, 127 pounds

After missing some time in early December due to injury, returning undefeated PIAA champion Fred Bachmann was dominant the rest of 2025 before making his way out to California with Faith Christian Academy for its first appearance at the acclaimed Doc Buchanan last weekend. Bachmann entered the tournament as the #2 seed and advanced to the quarterfinals with a technical fall and a fall. Bachmann had a 4-1 win over Tommy Marchetti in the quarters and rode out #9 Paul Ruiz for a 2-1 win in an ultimate tiebreaker. In the finals, #4 Ignacio Villasenor defeated Bachmann fell 7-6 in the ultimate tiebreaker, riding Bachmann out for the final 30-second period to win the 129-pound Doc B title. Despite finishing runner-up, it’s still a great performance for Bachmann, who hadn’t been tested yet this season, and it is a good sign for Faith Christian Academy as they advance through the season with their demanding schedule.

Will Detar (SR) - Trinity, 133 pounds

Three-time PIAA medalist and Northwestern commit Will Detar followed up his Powerade title performance a couple of weeks back by winning the 133-pound Mid-Winter Mayhem title last weekend. Detar, ranked #12, picked up three first-period falls to open the tournament, before defeating returning state qualifier Austin Carfley 4-0 in the quarterfinals, and then picked up a 1-0 decision over returning state medalist Mason Whitney in the semifinals. That win set up a Powerade finals rematch with #19 Kavin Muyleart, a match that went 2-1 in tiebreakers in Detar’s favor at Powerade. This time, it was a third-period escape and takedown for the 4-2 victory for Detar to secure the title. Detar is now 22-0 on the season and will be looking to close out his career with his first PIAA title.

Brandt Harer (SR) - Montgomery, 145 pounds

Two-time PIAA champion Brandt Harer continued his dominant run this past weekend on his way to his fourth Mid-Winter Mayhem title. Second-ranked Harer cruised through the 145-pound field with six technical fall victories. Harer is 30-0 this season with 23 tech falls and four falls, and is potentially on the brink of PIAA history as he is now 187-2 in his career. Aaron Seidel set the PIAA career wins record last year when he finished with 206 victories. Harer is just 20 wins away from breaking that record with just under two months to go in the season.

Joe Bachmann (JR) - Faith Christian Academy, 152 pounds

Two-time PIAA champion Joe Bachmann joined his brother with a Doc B runner-up finish this past weekend. Sixth-ranked Bachmann picked up a fall and two technical falls to open the tournament before close decisions in his quarter and semifinals bouts over Tommy Holguin and #10 Nick Schwartz. In the 153-pound final, Bachmann took on #9 Michael Romero of St. John Bosco. Bachmann gave up a takedown in the first period before picking up the escape to cut it to 3-1 after the first period. After riding Romero out the entire second period, Bachmann picked up an escape early in the third period to make it 3-2. Bachmann pushed the action and earned a stall warning on Romero, but it wasn’t enough, as he fell 3-2. Again, no cause for concern for Bachmann or Faith Christian Academy, as Bachmann navigated a strong Doc B field to make the finals at another major tournament, following his runner-up finish at Ironman back in early December.

Melvin Miller (JR) - Bishop McCort, 160 pounds

After titles at The Beast of the East and Powerade, #2 Melvin Miller ran through another tournament as he picked up his third Mid-Winter Mayhem title last weekend at 160 pounds. Miller pinned his first five opponents before meeting returning PIAA runner-up #19 Gabriel Ballard in the finals. Miller won a wild one over Ballard, with a 19-11 major decision in which Ballard picked up two takedowns.

Adam Waters (SR) - Faith Christian Academy, 189 pounds

Three-time PIAA champion Adam Waters made his return to the mat last weekend at Doc B after nearly a month away from competition after suffering an injury in the quarterfinals of Ironman. Despite participating in just three practices leading into the tournament, second-ranked Waters looked back to form as he picked up a fall and two technical falls to make the semifinals before defeating #16 Jonathan Rocha 7-3 to punch his ticket to the 193-pound finals. Waters looked great in the finals and raced out to a 9-2 lead over #11 Ladd Holman before giving up a late escape and takedown to take the bout 9-6. The return of Waters is huge for Faith Christian Academy as it will look to win another PIAA Dual State championship next month, while Waters is on track to become just the 15th four-time PIAA champion in March.

Eighth-ranked Hoare dominated the 215-pound field with a 42-second pin and five technical falls to win the 215-pound title. This was Hoare’s second straight Mid-Winter Mayhem title. He’s looking to put himself in the state title conversation as we progress towards Hershey.

Mark Effendian (SR) - Faith Christian Academy, 285 pounds

Two-time PIAA medalist Mark Effendian continues to roll in his senior season as he joined Adam Waters with a Doc B title last weekend, helping lead Faith Christian Academy to a runner-up finish in the team race. The nation’s #5 heavyweight cruised to the 288-pound Doc B title with five falls, including a fall over #19 Andrew Arroyo in the semifinals and a second-period fall over #18 Zayne Candelaria in the finals. Effendian is now 25-0 on the season with Ironman and Doc B titles. He will look to cap his incredible senior run with his first PIAA title before heading to Princeton next year.

Pennsylvania High School Premium Rankings

Check out the Pennsylvania High School Wrestling Premium Rankings, which are generated by using an athlete’s complete match history to predict a wrestler’s performance against others in their weight class by considering factors such as win-loss records, the quality of their victories (pins, technical falls, major decisions), the strength of their opponents, and overall historical performance patterns.

The data is updated every Monday, sourced from the Trackwrestling season results. Since each team is responsible for maintaining its season results, any data discrepancies for a wrestler should be addressed by contacting their coach to manage the information within the season. This includes the weight class assigned. Wrestlers are eligible to be ranked after competing in five matches at a single weight.
