Nike All-American Spotlight: Major Mid-Season Performances
Doc Buchanan and the Cheesehead gave a number of wrestlers the opportunity to make major mid-season statements.

Clovis High School hosted Doc Buchanan over the weekend, and like most years, this was the deepest high school tournament on the West Coast. This week's Nike All-American spotlight features three wrestlers who made big statements at Doc B and one who held it down at Wisconsin's Cheesehead tournament.
Mario Carini Takes Over #1
The Doc Buchanan field at 175 lbs created one of the deepest brackets of the 2025-26 high school season. All signs pointed to a third bout of the season between former #1 Joseph Jeter and former #2 Nicholas Singer. That rematch was disrupted when Pitman's Mason Ontiveros defeated Jeter and Poway's Mario Carini defeated Singer.
Carini controlled his Doc B final against Ontiveros 8-1 and took over the top spot in the rankings at 175 lbs.

Ignacio Villasenor Evens the Score
Fred Bachmann and Ignacio Villasenor have been two of the top lightweights, not just in the US, but on the planet, for several years. In fact, they had a consequential meeting in 2023 at the U17 World Championships in Istanbul. Villasenor won that contest 6-0 and went on to secure a bronze medal.
Their rematch in the 2024 Ironman finals went to Bachmann whose first period re-attack resulted in the only takedown of the match. Last Saturday, Villasenor earned another hard-fought victory on another big stage. After both wrestlers secured a takedown in regulation, Villasenor won the contest in ultimate tie breakers.

Michael Romero Notches The Upset
After finishing 4th at Fargo this summer and 6th at Super 32 in the fall, Michael Romero began his high school season with a lot of momentum. He won the always challenging Reno Tournament of Champions in December which set the stage for the season's toughest test to date, Doc Buchanan.
The mid-season California gauntlet included over 50 nationally ranked wrestlers this year. Romero notched a ranked victory in the semifinals over Ivan Arias of Buchanan and secured an upset over Faith Christian's Joe Bachmann who was formerly ranked #3 in the country at the weight. Romero's performance moved him four spots up in the rankings and helped St. John Bosco move from #10 to #5 in the country.

Caleb Noble Earns Big Win At Cheesehead
Warren Township, Illinois' #6 Caleb Noble won a tough Cheesehead bracket over the weekend that included a quarterfinal matchup against #8 Cason Craft of Coweta, Oklahoma.
Noble, an Arizona State commit, fought hard to secure a 5-4 victory over the Fargo finalist. This was Noble's second victory over Craft this season.
