Five Michigan High School Freshmen Off To Blazing Starts
Five Michigan High School Freshmen Off To Blazing Starts
Rockford's Brody Compau, a Fargo All-American and Double Pan-Am gold medalist, leads a group of five unbeaten Michigan high school freshmen this season.

Given all he had already accomplished in 2025, Rockford freshman Brody Compau appeared poised for immediate high school success when this season began.
Compau has indeed dominated high school competition thus far, going 18-0 at 106/113 pounds, pinning 11 opponents and dispatching two others via technical fall. He has captured Kent County Classic and Detroit Catholic Central Invitational titles.
Compau's most impressive performance so far has been pinning 2025 state qualifier Peter Vu (Grand Rapids Catholic Central) in 1:51 to advance to the DCC Invitational semifinals. He knocked off fellow freshman Gabriel Ryzyi of DCC, 9-3, in the final in a possible preview of this year's Division 1 state championship match.
The buildup to Compau's first high school season began in the fall of 2024 when he won the 7th and 8th grade division of the Brian Keck Memorial Preseason Tournament and PNL Fall Championships. Compau also held his own during the 2024 Grappler Fall Classic, placing sixth in the 106-pound high school elite division despite competing as an eighth-grader.
He began 2025 by winning a pair of Grappler Elite League events and the PNL Winter Championships.
Next came a decision over Super 32 Middle School champion Lucas Layne (Florida) at the Tyrant McDonogh Middle School duals, a first-place showing at the Grapple Elite League final and second at the Journeyman World Classic.
Compau then captured the 44 kilogram, U15 freestyle title and placed fourth in Greco Roman at the U.S. Open and was named to the United States squad for the U15 Pan American Championships in May.
In Guatelma City, Guatemala, Compau was a double gold medalist at 44kg. He was especially dominant in Greco, winning all four of his matches by technical fall. Compau recorded two more technical falls on the way to freestyle gold.
He then finished fifth in the U16 freestyle division in Fargo before reaching the Round of 16 at Super 32 with a 4-2 record.
Compau again competed in the 106-pound, high school elite division of the Grappler Fall Classic, this time placing fourth. He knocked off two-time New York state medalist Wyatt Satori and Illinois state quarterfinalist Jackson Sorey along the way.
Here is a look at this season's other unbeaten freshmen:
Landon Learn (Muskegon Reeths Puffer): The 113-pounder's high school career is off to a scorching start with a 25-0 record, including 15 pins.
At the Fruitport Legends Tournament earlier this month, he edged Kent City senior Sam Kik in dramatic fashion, 6-5. Trailing 5-3, Learn caught Kik, who placed fifth in the Division 1 state tournament last season, for a three-point takedown in the final 10 seconds of the match.
Learn hopes to become the school's first state champion since Hunter McCall in 2020.
Ethan Kowalski (Alpena): The 113-pounder has proven to be a dangerous pinner with a 25-0 record this season, including 22 falls.
Alpena has not had an individual state champion since heavyweight Edwin Spragg in 1965.
Zaiden Buell (Martin): The team manager of the Martin squad which advanced to the last season's Division 4 state championship match, Buell is off to a dominant high school start with a 21-0 record.
All of the 120-pounder's wins have come via pin (10) or technical fall (11). Buell's most impressive performance has been a 20-3 technical fall over Plainwell's Dylan Nieuwenhuis, who finished 36-5 last season and placed third at the Division 2 state tournament.
Buell is filling the massive void in Martin's lineup left by the graduation of two-time state champion Logan Gilbert, who was also third in the state at 120 pounds last season and finished second in the state as a sophomore.
Cael Tyler (Roscommon): Fewer freshman typically enjoy success at upper weights, but this 175-pounder is an exception. Tyler is off to a blazing 30-0 start, including 21 pins and five technical falls.
His most noteworthy win thus far has been a 5-2 decision over Lakeview's Lucas Vail, who finished fifth in last season's Division 4 state tournament at 165 pounds.
Tyler warmed up for his first high school season by finishing second at the Grappler Preseason Challenge in November. He stunned Dundee's Avery Lane in the opening round, taking a 10-5 decision. Lane was third in the Division 3 state tournament at 144 pounds last season.
Could Tyler become Roscommon's first state champion since Brenden Spencer in 2018?
Clash of Powerhouses
Expect fireworks when Detroit Catholic Central (#34) in the latest Flo 40 national team rankings, hosts the DCC Super Duals Saturday.

On paper, at least, the most intriguing matchups from a Michigan perspective are a potential 157-pound match pitting #8 Blake Cosby (Dundee) against #11 Griffin LaPlante (St. Francis) and a possible 165-pound showdown between #2 Melvin Miller (McCourt) against #20 Don Beaufait (Dundee).
Catholic Central is coming off a 38-27 loss to #12 Perrysburg (Ohio) last week.

Check out the Michigan High School Wrestling Premium Rankings, which are generated by using an athlete’s complete match history to predict a wrestler’s performance against others in their weight class by considering factors such as win-loss records, the quality of their victories (pins, technical falls, major decisions), the strength of their opponents and overall historical performance patterns.
The data is updated every Monday, sourced from the Trackwrestling season results. Since each team is responsible for maintaining their season results, any data discrepancies for a wrestler should be addressed by contacting their coach to manage the information within the season. This includes the weight class assigned. Wrestlers are eligible to be ranked after competing in five matches at a single weight.
