The high school wrestling landscape in Nevada has some significant changes on the horizon with girls wrestling becoming a sanctioned sport next year, but for now, the championship spotlight will remain on the four classifications of boys teams.

Those four classes – 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A – will see the current season end over two weekends in February with the 2026 Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association State Wrestling Championships, and while the action won’t be broadcast live on FloWrestling and the FloSports app, the matches will be archived on both platforms minutes after they conclude.

The weekend of Feb. 13-14 will include the 2A, 3A and 5A state meets at the Winnemucca Events Center in Winnemucca, Nevada, and the 4A meet will be held Feb. 21 at Desert Pines High School in Las Vegas

And, for wrestling fans who will be in Winnemucca in person, they also will get a sneak peek at what’s ahead, as the festivities will include the Girls Wrestling Invitational.

For the 2A, 3A and girls state events, the top four placers in each weight classes at the Southern Region/League/Qualifier and the top four finishers from the Northern Region/League/Qualifier advance to the eight-wrestler single-elimination championship brackets.

In Class 5A, the top six placers in each weight class at the Southern League Tournament and the top six finishers at the Northern League Tournament advance to the 12-wrestler championship bracket. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds receive first-round byes.

In last year’s 2A state meet, White Pine edged Pershing County by a single point to claim the team title (151-150).

At the 3A level, it was Moapa Valley cruising into the top spot with 143.5 points. Lowry was second with 87.

The 5A competition saw SLAM Nevada more than double the points scored by runner-up Spanish Springs, 280-130.

Over the second weekend of competition, the 4A battle also was a bit lopsided, with Sierra Vista taking the crown with 211.5 points. Faith Lutheran was a distant second with 132.5 points.

The 2025 Girls State Invitational, held alongside the 2A, 3A and 5A meets in Fallon, Nevada, Centennial bested the SLAM Nevada girls for the title, 129.5-106.

Girls wrestling in Nevada has spent recent seasons as a division of boys wrestling, with some girls even choosing to compete against the boys. Now, it’s time for them to have a stage of their own.

Initially, girls wrestling will remain as an open class, but that could change in the future as things evolve and interest continues to grow.

As you get settled in for the new championship season, here’s everything you need to know about the NIAA State Wrestling Championships, including a link to the brackets:

Did You Know: The First NIAA State Wrestling Championships Was Held In 1969

That’s right, just before Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to land on the moon, the spotlight belonged to the high school wrestlers in Nevada, who were competing for state titles for the first time.

For the first two years (1969, 1970), state championships in Nevada were determined in one classification. Both titles went to Clark High School, and Clark never found the winner’s circle again.

There were two classes (3A, 2A) for the following three years, three classes from 1975-1996 (3A, 2A, 1A) and 1997-2020 (4A, 3A, 2A) and now four classifications (5A, 4A, 3A, 2A) since 2022.

Battle Mountain is the all-time leader with 21 team state titles, followed by Lowry (16) and Yerington (14).

More than 40 student-athletes have won four individual state titles in Nevada.

Manuel Saldate of SLAM Nevada owns the state’s record for career wins with 228. He won four state championships from 2022-2025 at 120, 132, 138 and 138 pounds, respectively. His overall record in high school was 228-19.

Saldate’s team won the Class 5A championship in each of his own title-winning seasons.
