Pennsylvania long has been a hotbed of competitive wrestling, and the Western Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic League will be among the first groups in the state to begin its postseason action.

The 2026 WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ & Girls’ Wrestling Championships will begin Jan. 26 with preliminary action and run through the crowning of the individual boys champions on Feb. 21.

When it’s all over, team and individual champions will be determined for the boys, while only individual championships will be awarded on the girls side. 

Right now, though, we’re here to talk about just one portion of the three exciting weeks – the 2026 WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Wrestling Team Championships, which will feature the top boys teams from Class 3A and Class 2A at AHN Arena on the campus of Peters Township High School in McMurray, Pennsylvania. 

All of the action from the 2026 WPIAL Team Championships will be streamed live on FloWrestling and the FloSports app.

Schools in the two classifications – Class 3A and Class 2A – qualify for the WPIAL Team Championships by finishing among the top two teams in their respective sections or by earning a wildcard selection, made by the sport’s steering committee. 

For the following WPIAL Individual Championships, the athletes must finish in the top six places in their sectional tournaments. The top performers from the individual WPIAL event advance to the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association regional round. 

In 2025, the Class 3A team title went to Franklin Regional in an upset over Connellsville, while Burrell Senior High School reestablished itself as the local powerhouse, defeating Derry Area to win for the second consecutive year and 19th overall.  

Burrell won 15 straight times from 2007-2021. Are the Bucs back in business? Can they add to their dynasty in 2026?

How To Watch The 2026 WPIAL Team Championships

Live coverage of the 2026 WPIAL Team Championships on Jan. 31 will be broadcast on FloWrestling and the FloSports app, with news, notes, stats and more available on both platforms.

Archives will be available immediately following the conclusion of each match.

What Teams Won At The 2025 WPIAL Team Championships?

• Class 3A – Franklin Regional def. Connellsville, 32-25
• Class 2A – Burrell def. Derry Area, 33-27

The win was the third WPIAL championship for Franklin Regional (2014, 2015).

It was the second straight victory for Burrell, and the team’s 19th team title overall.

When Are The 2026 WPIAL/UPMC Sports Medicine Boys’ & Girls’ Wrestling Championships?

Crowning all of the 2026 WPIAL wrestling champions will take some time.

The action will begin Jan. 26 with the preliminary round of the team championship for the boys, which will conclude live on FloWrestling on Jan. 31.

Sectional competition for the boys will be held across various locations Feb. 15.

The weekend of Feb. 20-21 will see the conclusion of the 2026 WPIAL Boys’ Wrestling Individual Championships at Chartiers Valley High School in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania.

Feb. 21 also will be the day champions are determined on the girls side, as the 2026 WPIAL Girls’ Wrestling Individual Championships takes place at Mount Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh. 

From there, the year’s top performers will move on to the PIAA regional competition. 

Did You Know: The WPIAL Is Closing In On 100 Years Of Activity

The first WPIAL champions were crowned in 1936, and the 2025-2026 season is the 91st year of competition.

Canon-McMillian owns the most titles in WPIAL history with 22. Waynesburg Central and Burrell are close behind with 21 and 19, respectively. No other program has won more than nine times. 

On the girls side, the 2023-2024 was the introduction of girls wrestling to the WPIAL championship landscape. 

Five girls have won WPIAL championships during both seasons of action, while Norwin High School of North Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, leads all schools with five individual titles over the two seasons.
