Teams from across Alabama will put their hard work and preparation to the test in the coming days with the start of regional competition in four classifications – 1A-4A, 5A, 6A and 7A – with the top two teams from each region, determined by Jan. 12, advancing to championship play.
In the 1A-4A and 6A categories, the preliminary and quarterfinal rounds will take place Jan. 16 or Jan. 17, hosted by participating schools.
The 5A and 7A quarterfinals will be held Jan. 16 or Jan. 17, also held at school facilities.
On Jan. 23, the remaining competitors will converge on the state-of-the-art Birmingham CrossPlex, a multi-sport venue that was constructed in 2011 and is the home of top-tier competition in track, swimming, volleyball, cheerleading, wrestling and so much more.
The venue also was the backdrop for last year’s memorable championship round, where one classification was decided by a single point, and the other three featured lopsided victories.
The 7A title went to Huntsville for the third consecutive season, but it was a little close for comfort – a 33-32 win over Vestavia Hills.
Class 6A and 5A also saw repeat champions - Mountain Brook and Scottsboro, respectively. Mountain Brook’s win also marked a three-peat.
The 1A-4A crown went to Tallassee with the biggest margin of victory, a 69-11 win over Oak Brove.
The Alabama State Dual Championships was held for the first time in 2017, while the first traditional state championship event took place in 1956.
