Will Michigan's Wrestling Dynasties Continue This Season?

The Lowell wrestling program has established a dynasty few Michigan high school athletic programs have surpassed.

In fact, the list continues to shrink.

With a commanding 52-14 decision over Fowlerville in last season's Division 2 championship match, the Red Arrows extended their state record for consecutive wrestling titles to 12. A 13th title this season would tie Lowell with the Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice boys lacrosse program, which accomplished that feat from 2005-2017.

The record for all sports in Lower Peninsula or statewide competition of 15 was set by the East Grand Rapids boys swimming and diving team from 1948-62.

The Red Arrows' run began in 2014 during coach David Dean's ninth and final season with the program. Dean, a two-time All-American at Minnesota, also led Lowell to a state title in 2009.

R.J. Boudro, Dean's assistant for six seasons, then took over and the championship streak continued unabated as the former Michigan and Michigan State starter racked up a 223-34 duals record during his tenure along with the 11 state titles.

Overall, Lowell has made 22 of the past 26 Division 2 team state championship matches, capturing 15 state titles.

This season, a new coach is attempting to keep the Red Arrows' dynasty alive after Boudro was named head coach at NCAA Division II Grand Valley State in July.

Enter former Michigan State wrestler Kyle Slocum, who has taken over the program after 18 seasons as an assistant coach. He was named Michigan's Division 2 Assistant Coach of the Year last season.

Matt Dood is serving as associate head coach under Slocum, a Belding High School graduate and 2004 Division 3 state champion at 119 pounds.

Despite losing six of 11 state qualifiers, including three state champions, the Red Arrows appear to have reloaded nicely this season.

They are undefeated in duals, including a win over four-time defending Division 4 state champion Hudson. They were also third at the Grappler Gold Invitational.

The Red Arrows return four of eight state medalists, including two-time state champion Jarrett Smith, a Stanford commit who is ranked currently ranked #3 in the nation at 113, but is wrestling at 120 this season. He also took third in the state as a freshman and has a 123-13 career high school record.

The multi-time Fargo All-American was honorable mention on the Nike High School  Preseason All-American Team and is #94 on the Class of 2026 Big Board. Smith was third in Fargo freestyle competition this year and won a Grappler Gold Invitational title earlier this month.

Also back is Carson Blum, who lost to Smith in the 113-pound state title match last season, Cole Cichoracki (fifth in the state at 120) and Logan Dawson (fifth, 144). Blum is at 126 this season, while Cichoracki is at 138 and Dawson remains at 144.

State qualifiers John McKay (113) and Trevor Boone (157) also return. Boone is off to a 7-0 start after going 34-15 last season.

Heavyweight Braylen Meeuwsen is 7-3 this season while 215-pounders Max Bigard and Weston McFarland are a combined 9-2.

Lowell's biggest loss is four-time state champion Jackson Blum (132), who was named Michigan's Mr. Wrestler last season and is currently at Indiana. Gage Lyons has gone 4-4 at 132 so far this season.

State champions Owen Segorski (165) and Casey Engle (190) are also gone. Keith Tett is 5-5 at 165 and Gabe Olin, who wrestled at 175 last season, is 4-2 at 190.

The Red Arrows have outstanding lower-weight depth with Mason Saylor (120/126) and Lyle O'Boyle (126/132). They were a combined 64-8 last season.

Michigan's other defending team state champions hope to continue dynasties of their own.

Here is a closer look:

Dundee (Division 3)

The Vikings are seeking a ninth consecutive state title and 12th in 14 years. Dundee's run started under former coach Tim Roberts before co-head coaches Nate Hall and Garrett Stevens took over prior to the 2022-23 season. The duo's dual meet record is 59-7.

Last season, the Vikings trounced Yale, 74-0, in the championship match, becoming the first team to pitch a finals shutout in the 38-year history of the team state tournament.

Dundee, #34 in Flowrestling's Top 40 national team rankings, is absolutely loaded again this season thanks to the return of 12 of 13 state medalists, including six state champions. All but one of the Vikings' 14 state qualifiers have returned.

The Vikings are unbeaten in duals and won the Monroe County Sheriff's Invitational and took third at the loaded Carnahan Memorial Invitational in Crown Point, Indiana.

Blake Cosby, ranked #7 nationally at 157, is chasing a third state title after winning at 150 last season while going 37-0. The University of Michigan signee is one of the state's four returning unbeaten state champions.

At Carnahan, Cosby beat #17 Jackson Bradley of Indiana, a Purdue recruit, via technical fall in the finals at 157.

The past Fargo All-American was honorable mention on the Nike High School Boys Preseason All-American Team and is No.33 on the Class of 2026 Big Board. Cosby was eighth at Super 32 after placing second in 2024.

Mason Katschor (132) is also a two-time state champion, who won a Grappler Fall Classic title.

Other returning state champions are Mason Haines (120), Broderick Braden (132), Wyatt Burns (138), Jeremy Amrhein (157) and Don Beaufait (165).

Beaufait recently made his national rankings debut at #20 after stunning then-#4 Liam Kelly of Mount Carmel, Illinois in the Carnahan title match. Kelly has committed to Illinois.

Other returning state medalists are Stone Redmon (second, 144), Rocco Redmon (second, 190), Haydn Nutt (second, 120), Bryan Sterling (third, 126) and Avery Lane (third, 144).

Detroit Catholic Central (Division 1)

The Shamrocks, #35 in Flowrestling's Top 40 national team rankings, are seeking a fourth straight state championship and 12th in the past 17 years under 19th-year head coach Mitch Hancock, a Central Michigan All-American.

Hancock boasts a 417-65 duals mark with 14 state championship match appearances.

DCC is unbeaten in duals this season and finished fifth at the Carnahan Memorial Invitational.

In all, nine of 12 state medalists return, including state champions Wyatt Lees and Grayson Fuchs. DCC also has 10 of 14 state qualifiers back.

Lees is going for a fourth state title after winning 138 pounds last season. Fuchs, ranked #13 nationally at 144, is seeking a third championship after taking a title at 150 last season. The future Purdue Boilermaker is #32 on the Class of 2027 Big Board.

Other returning state medalists are Ryan Totten (second, 120), Caden Krueger (third, 175), Mack Mosovic (fourth, 126), Jamison Gregory (fifth, 126), Meyer Murray (fifth, 132), Braxton Roche (fifth, 157) and Alex Buskirk (eighth, 150).

Hudson (Division 4)

The Tigers are pursuing a fifth consecutive state championship and 13th in the past 18 seasons under coach Scott Marry, whose tenure began in 1989.

He is Michigan's second-winningest wrestling coach with a 959-214 duals mark. Only Bruce Bittenbender, who guided Stevensville Lakeshore to a 981-270-2 mark from 1970-2022, boasts more dual victories.

Hudson is 13-1 in duals thus far this season, its lone loss coming at the hands of 12-time defending Division 2 state champion Lowell. The Tigers have beaten 2025 Division 1 runner-up Davison.

Hudson returns eight of 11 state qualifiers, including five of seven medalists.

Top returnee Nick Sorrow (132 pounds) hopes to join the four-time state champions club this season after winning it all at 126 last season.

The Michigan State commit won U-17 Pan Am Greco gold and freestyle silver during the offseason. He placed in the top four in freestyle and Greco at the U-17 World Team Trials.

Defending state champion Beckett Campbell (144) is also back, along with state medalists Jaxton Kimling (second, 132), Colt Perry (second, 132) and Devon Brigman (eighth, 165).

Michigan High School Premium Rankings

Check out the Michigan High School Wrestling Premium Rankings, which are generated by using an athlete’s complete match history to predict a wrestler’s performance against others in their weight class by considering factors such as win-loss records, the quality of their victories (pins, technical falls, major decisions), the strength of their opponents and overall historical performance patterns.

The data is updated every Monday, sourced from the Trackwrestling season results. Since each team is responsible for maintaining their season results, any data discrepancies for a wrestler should be addressed by contacting their coach to manage the information within the season. This includes the weight class assigned. Wrestlers are eligible to be ranked after competing in five matches at a single weight.
