When Oregon State visited Ohio State last January, it was the ninth all-time meeting between the two programs, but the first since the 2000-2001 season. It also was the Beavers’ first trip to Columbus, Ohio, since the 1994-1995 campaign.
Oregon State won the previous clash 23-13, but the Buckeyes finally got their redemption after more than two decades, winning 40-3 in 2025. Ohio State now leads the series 5-4.
The Buckeyes went on to finish the 2024-2025 season with a 13-3 overall record and a fifth-place performance at the 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s Wrestling Championships.
The Beavers struggled last season, going 4-7 overall and closing the year with a 24th-place finish at the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
This season, Ohio State didn’t waste any time making a statement.
The Buckeyes rolled to a significant win at the inaugural National Duals Invitational in mid-November, beating Iowa in the championship showdown for the title and unprecedented $200,000 top prize.
The event featured 11 of the top 12 teams from the 2025 NCAA Wrestling Championships and eight of the top 10 teams from this season’s early rankings.
A month later, Ohio State improved to 8-0 in dual action this year and became the first team in more than four years to dethrone powerhouse Penn State from the top of the FloWrestling NCAA DI Wrestling Rankings.
As the calendar barrels toward 2026, Ohio State’s short stint atop the rankings has come to an end, with Penn State jumping from third back to No. 1 on the Dec. 22 edition of the rankings. OSU is back in the No. 2 spot, 20 points behind the Nittany Lions.
Entering the showdown with the Beavers, Ohio State owns a 10-0 record this year.
Oregon State still has seen limited competition this season, participating in a handful of open/invitational events and a few dual meets. Through Dec. 19, the Beavers are 2-0 in duals this year, with the visit from Ohio State being just the third head-to-head matchup for Oregon State this season.
Despite the shorter schedule, Oregon State has not gone unnoticed. The Beavers are tied for No. 23 in the latest FloWrestling rankings.
