All-Star Classic Headlined Opening College Weekend

All-Star Classic Headlined Opening College Weekend

The 2025 NWCA All-Star Classic is in the books, traditional college powers roll, and another big weekend is on the horizon.

All-Star Classic Headlined Opening College Weekend

There are plenty of women’s wrestling tournaments this weekend, but two stand out. The Bill Farrell Memorial International is in New York City on November 7, and the Adrian Invitational and Duals are on November 8-9.

The Bill Farrell Memorial International will feature an international, domestic, collegiate, and high school flavor. Click here for the full entry list.

Here are the Bill Farrell Memorial International matchups we hope to see.

50 kg: Sage Mortimer (USA) vs Emily Shilson (USA)
These two haven’t faced each other since the controversial brutality call at the 2023 U23 National Championships that disqualified Mortimer from the tournament. Shilson owns the series with a 6-0 record, but Mortimer has had good results in the subsequent two years. Shilson is a three-time age-level World champion, and Mortimer is a 2024 U23 World champ. This should be a good one — if it happens.

53 kg: Everest Leydecker (USA) vs Katie Gomez (USA) or Clare Booe (USA)
Ledecker has been on a hot streak, winning her fourth Who’s Number One title, a U20 World gold medal, and reaching Final X. She usually competes at 55 kg, but this tournament allows a two-kilogram allowance, so she will compete against different opponents. The current high school star could face Booe or Gomez, finalists at college nationals earlier this year. Booe transferred from King to West Point, and Gomez is a 2021 U17 World champion.

55 kg: Amani Jones (USA) vs Marissa Gallegos (USA)
This would be a rematch of the 2023 National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championship finals, won by Gallegos, 7-2

59 kg: Michaela Beck (USA) vs Claire DiCugno (USA)
Beck returns to her home city after reaching Final X in 2023 and the final World Team Trials in 2024. DiCugno returns from an injury after winning a college national title for King in 2024. She transferred to North Central, so this is a litmus test for the NCAA Championships.

62 kg: Tserenchimed Sukhee (MGL) vs Alara Boyd (USA)
Sukhee is a 2024 World silver medalist. Boyd is a two-time age-level World medalist. This will be a good challenge for Boyd.

72 kg: Kaylynn Albrecht (USA) vs Skylar Grote (USA)
Albrecht defeated Grote, 5-4, on a last-second step-out during the National Team match at Final X. It would be fun to see them run it back.

What We Learned About Top-Ranked Iowa

The Hawkeyes sent a handful of wrestlers to the Luther Hill Open on Saturday, November 1, then faced Central College and Cornell College in Iowa City the following day. The dual results didn’t tell us much, other than Iowa can dominate two in-state Division III programs.

It was more interesting to see what personnel Iowa used, and where.

Val Solorio took the lead in a heated three-way race for the 103-pound spot. She defeated Sterling Dias, a two-time All-American who finished 2nd and 4th at college nationals, in the Luther Hill Open semis, 11-1. Dias defeated teammate Rianne Murphy, 2-2, for third after losing to Murphy for third at nationals. Solorio won by 10-0 tech over Gracie Pattison of Central the following day.

Solorio has the early lead, but this in-room battle is far from over.

Karlee Brooks defeated Bella Williams, 4-0, in another intrasquad battle at the Luther Hill Open. Brooks and Williams split time at 131 during the duals, with both earning 10-0 techs.

Ella Schmit dropped down to 138 after two seasons at 143/145. She finished seventh at the 2024 National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships, and, of course, won both her matches on Sunday.

U23 World teamers Brianna Gonzalez (117) and Kylie Welker (180) did not compete over the weekend.

Below are results for both duals.

What We Learned About North Central And Grand Valley State

The Cardinals and Lakers didn’t flex their full line-ups at the Pointer Open, but they showed off depth instead.

103: Grand Valley State’s Rayana Sahagun knocked off 2023 NCWWC champion Maddie Avilla, 3-2, in the 103-pound finals.

110: Kaelani Shufeldt showed she is ready to roll after finishing second for Lock Haven at the 2024 National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships. She transferred to North Central, competed unattached at 117 last season, and secured two 10-0 techs at the Pointer Open.

117: Incoming freshman Libby Roberts of Grand Valley State will be a good option for Jake Short after pinning 2025 All-American Shea Reisel in the semifinals and downing Taylin Long, 11-2, in the finals.

124: True freshman Riley Rayome (North Central) downed returning All-American Aspen Blasko (Grand Valley State), 5-4, in the finals.

160: Elleni Johnson (Grand Valley State) pinned Taylor Graveman (North Central) in a battle of returning All-Americans.

207: Caroline Ward defeated Dasia Yearby, 8-6, to take the early lead for North Central’s starting spot at heavyweight.
