In the 57 kg matchup at Final X, Helen Maroulis and Amanda Martinez will face off for a spot at the 2025 World Championships. Both are veterans, but Maroulis is one of the best American wrestlers of all time, and Martinez is still looking for her first senior world championship appearance.

Maroulis' Greatness

Helen Maroulis is nothing short of a legend in USA Wrestling. In 2016, she became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling, and since then she claimed bronze medals in 2021 and 2024. 

She is also a three time World Champion, winning in 2015, 2017 and 2021. She’s medaled on the world stage four other times, claiming silver in 2012 and 2022 and bronze in 2014 and 2023. With her bronze medal in 2024, she automatically qualified for Final X. She hasn’t lost a match against an American competitor since the 2020 Olympic Trials, and is one of the most decorated American wrestlers ever. 

Though Maroulis hasn’t competed a freestyle match this calendar year, she’s still a heavy favorite to win at Final X and advance to the 2025 World Championship, looking to make her 12th appearance on the team. 

Martinez Sharing Wisdom

Martinez had a successful college career at North Central College in which she earn two NCWWC final appearances and became the program’s all-time leader in career victories. She returned to the Cardinals as an assistant coach. 

She made the 2022 senior national team, and reached Final X this year with a win at the 2025 US Open. This year she also won bronze at the Pan-Am championships and is looking to take down the giant in Helen Maroulis at Final X. 

Though Martinez won by forfeit in the US Open finals, she dominated her opponents on the way there, not allowing a single point. 

David vs Goliath Rematch

This will be the second matchup between Maroulis and Martinez, who competed once before in 2022 at the Zouhaier Sghaier Ranking Series Tournament. In that match, Maroulis dominated early and ended the match with a fall. 

The two will battle it out on the mat at Final X to see if Maroulis will make her 12th national team or Martinez will make her second.
