More NCAA Fast Facts: Penn State | Nebraska | Iowa | 5th-10th | States | Bonus Facts

— Oklahoma State finished third with 102.5 points — the highest point total for a third-place team since Oklahoma State finished third in 2017 with 103.

— Coach David Taylor became the first rookie coach to lead a team to a top three finish since Cael Sanderson’s Iowa State squad placed second in 2007.

— Oklahoma State national champs Dean Hamiti (174) and Wyatt Hendrickson (285) took rare-traveled paths to the top of the podium when each notched a pair of wins over previous champions. Hamiti took out Penn State’s Levi Haines and Missouri’s Keegan O’Toole in the semis and finals, while Hendrickson downed Penn State’s Greg Kerkvliet and Minnesota’s Gable Steveson.

It’s just the third time in 15 years at the NCAA Championships that a title winner reached the top of the podium by beating two previous champs. Penn State’s Carter Starocci did it in 2024 with wins over Mekhi Lewis and Shane Griffith. Prior to that, however, Troy Nickerson was the last wrestler to knock off national champs in succession at the NCAA Championships. Nickerson defeated Angel Escobedo and Paul Donahoe on his way to the 125-pound title in 2009.

— Hamiti was one of five wrestlers who lost on conference tournament weekend and bounced back to win an NCAA title. Vincent Robinson, Jesse Mendez, Antrell Taylor and Stephen Buchanan also accomplished that feat. It’s the second straight year half of the NCAA champs came up short at their conference tournament.

— Hendrickson led all participants in team points with 26. He tied Missouri’s Cam Steed for the most pins in the tournament with three.

— Oklahoma State scored 19 bonus points in the tournament.
