NCAA Wrestling Tournament Team Scoring Explained
There are three different ways a wrestler can score team points during the NCAA Tournament: 1) Advancement Points, 2) Bonus Points, and 3) Placement Points. Advancement points are earned by a wrestler recording a win either in the championship or consolation rounds. A wrestler receives 1 point for a win in the championship rounds but only 0.5 points for a win in the consolation rounds.
Bonus points are added to advancement points if a wrestler wins by fall, tech fall, or major decision:
- 2 points - fall, forfeit, default, disqualification
- 1.5 points - tech fall
- 1 point - major decision
Finally, wrestlers receive points for their team based on where they place:
- 1st place: 16 points
- 2nd place: 12 points
- 3rd place: 10 points
- 4th place: 9 points
- 5th place: 7 points
- 6th place: 6 points
- 7th place: 4 points
- 8th place: 3 points
