Round 1 - 4-3 Win Over Azamat Dauletbekov, KAZ
Dauletbekov struck first in this match with a nice duck under to a single leg but Brooks defended to only give up one point on a step-out. Shortly after giving up the step out, Brooks was put on the activity clock but score a takedown almost immediately to take a 2-1 lead in the first period. A lot of hand fighting for the rest of the first with the score still at 2-1 entering the break.
Brooks secured another takedown early in the second with a nice low ankle attack to extend his lead to 4-1. Brooks shut down all of Dauletbekov's attacks and almost ran behind for another takedown but Dauletbekov narrowly escaped to avoid giving up any more points. Brooks give up a stepout and a fleeing point at the end of the match but was never in trouble and held on to win 4-3.
Quarterfinals - 11-1 win over Hayato Ishiguro, JPN
Aaron Brooks controlled the handfight early to put Ishiguro on the clock in the first period. Brooks almost got a step out but Ishiguro countered with slick footwork and earned a stepout to take the lead on criteria - 1-1. Not much action for the rest of the first and the score remained 1-1 at the break.
Brooks came out in the second period aggressively with a double leg off the whistle. Ishiguro defended with a whizzer but Brooks powered through it with an underhook to finish with a takedown. Brooks finished another leg attack and put Ishiguro on his back - it looked like the ref called for a pin but it wasn't confirmed so the score remained 5-1. Brooks picked up his pace and offense and finished the match with 3 straight takedowns for the 11-1 tech.
Semifinals - 4-3 loss to Magomed Ramazanov, BUL
The match began with hard hand fighting by both Brooks and Ramazanov. Neither Ramazanov nor Brooks took any committed attacks in the first and Ramazanov was put on the activity clock with just over a minute left in the first. With Ramazanov on the clock, Brooks hit a powerful double and blew through Ramazanov for the finish. The shot clock ran out for Ramazanov giving Brooks a 3-0 lead at the end of the first.
In the second, Brooks got in deep and almost finished but Ramazanov scrambled out and almost got behind Brooks but Brooks defended leaving the score at 3-0. Ramazanov secured a takedown off of Brooks' shot and immediately went to a bow-and-arrow turn on top. Ramazanov wrenched Brooks' knee hard and almost got the turn on top but Brooks somehow avoided giving up exposure. With 30 seconds left, Ramazanov pressed forward and Brooks was warned for fleeing. With just 10 seconds left, Brooks fell in on Ramazanov's leg and Ramazanov countered with a crotch lift with just a few seconds left on the clock to win 4-3 - heartbreaker for Brooks. He'll wrestle for a bronze medal on Friday afternoon.
Bronze Medal Match - 5-0 win over Javrail Shapiev, UZB
Not much happened in the first period - Shapiev was put on the clock and didn't score so Brooks took a 1-0 lead into the break. Brooks started the second period with an underhook and ran Shapiev out of bounds for a step out to take a 2-0 lead. Brooks was put on the shot clock with 2 minutes to go in the match and Brooks almost immediately fired off a blast double and finished for a takedown. Brooks shot another blast double and drove Shapiev out for a stepout and a 5-0 lead. Brooks continued to hand fight hard and Shapiev was nowhere close to scoring. Brooks wins 5-0 and wins the bronze medal.
