Who Are The Best Wrestlers From Every Women's College Championship Team?

Take a look at the top historical line-ups from each women's college championship program.

Who Are The Best Wrestlers From Every Women's College Championship Team?

How many women’s college teams have won a national championship, and who are the best wrestlers from those teams?

Since 2004, 12 teams have won a women’s college national championship between six divisions. There are currently three national divisions: NCWWC (NCAA), NAIA, and NJCAA (see key and graph below for a complete history).

WCNWomen's College Nationals
WCWAWomen's Collegiate Wrestling Association
NAIA National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics
NCWWC (NCAA)National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships
JCJCJunior College National Championships
NJCAANational Junior College Athletic Association

Women’s college wrestling reached an intersection in 2020. Three national championships were scheduled with NCAA and NAIA programs hosting tournaments for the first time in the same year.

The Women’s College Wrestling Association (WCWA) had done its job; by 2020 it had reached its final leg before passing the baton. This organization was created in 2008 to provide women an opportunity to compete, and it included all divisions with an end-of-the-year tournament that was considered the college national championships.

An unaffiliated women’s college national championship was held from 2004-07 before the WCWA was formed.

The NAIA Invitational Tournament was held in 2019, canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19, and resumed in 2021. The 2023 NAIA Championships were the first officially sanctioned women’s collegiate national championship ever.

The National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships (NCWWC) — a de facto NCAA Championship — includes all NCAA programs (D1, D2, and D3) with the first national championship in 2020. NCAA women’s wrestling is an emerging sport with four Division I programs (Iowa, Lindenwood, Presbyterian, and Sacred Heart).

The NCAA is expected to sanction women’s college wrestling for the 2025-26 season.

National junior colleges hosted a tournament for the first time in 2021 after the WCWA disbanded in 2020.

Who Are The Best Wrestlers From Championships Programs?

Below is every championship team’s best (sometimes debatable) historical lineup. This is the last time these weight classes will be used (they are changing next season) so it’s fun to look back at what was.

Iowa won this year’s National Collegiate Women’s Wrestling Championships but the Hawkeyes only have one year of data, so this year’s national tournament team is considered the best (so far).

This only includes those who competed in a college national championship. Several prominent names don’t appear since they competed before the first national tournament held in 2004. There are also instances where a weight wasn’t exact but an approximation was used to fit a worthy wrestler into the line-up.

Simon Fraser (Burnaby, British Columbia) only has one national team title but it might have the best historical line-up of any team.
