Along with drafting the UConn star in Edwards, the Mystics also selected Kaylynne Truong of Gonzaga at No.21 and Nastja Claessens of Belgium at No.30.
These picks may not have an immediate impact, but are solid selections who could develop into the necessary roles needed for this Mystics team to get back to Championship form.
Here's a preview of the Washington Mystics ahead of the 2024 WNBA season.
WNBA Preseason Preview 2024: Washington Mystics with Aaliyah Edwards
The Washington Mystics finished the 2023 WNBA season 19-21 and earned the 7th seed heading into the WNBA Playoffs. The Mystics postseason would end in the first round with a loss to New York.
The Mystics have failed to escape the first round since 2019, when they won the WNBA Finals for the first time in franchise history.
Edwards is the key piece being brought in to bring some excitement to this team with her experience in a winning culture at UConn. UConn starters over the last decade have a strong track record for being productive in their transition to the WNBA and the expectations remain the same for Edwards. At 6'3 the forward could a make great duo paired with Shakira Austin in the front court.
Truong of Gonzaga finished her senior season averaging 11.4 ppg while shooting 42% from three. She is a sniper at 5'8 who ranked second on the team in total three-point field goals made (93) and three-point percentage.
Claessens is a 6'0 19-year-old who has played on the Belgium National Team since 2019 and also with the national team in the 2024 FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament. During the 2023 season she averaged 14.5 ppg and 4.5 rebounds.
If Truong and Claessens will make the final roster along with Edwards remains unknown, however they both hold value in upside that may be worth developing for the mystics.Final rosters will be decided prior to opening day which is scheduled for May 14, the Mystics first regular season game is May 14 vs. the New York Liberty.
