Winning an Olympic gold medal is still the ultimate in wrestling. Making a U.S. team isn’t easy, though. The current trial system includes a best-of-three final to determine this country’s representative. 

Below are freestyle results for the best-of-three series at the final Olympic Trials beginning in 1988, along with placement at the Olympic Games. Women’s freestyle was added to the Olympics in 2004.

Rules and scoring have significantly changed over the years. The 2008 and 2012 Olympics used a best-of-three ball draw system where the winning wrestler had to win two periods. A wrestler could get outscored 9-2 (0-7, 1-1, 1-1) under that system, and still win. 

Winning the Olympic Trials doesn't always guarantee an Olympic spot, either. Sometimes a weight hasn't qualified for the Olympics or the wrestle-off gets postponed.
