The biggest series in college baseball last week, one featuring seven players on the FloBaseball composite top 100 MLB Draft prospect rankings, was the ACC Baseball opener between then No. 1 Wake Forest and No. 11 Duke.

Duke took the series two games to one and beat the Demon Deacons 8-5 and 10-8 and lost the middle game 6-3.

The prospect highlight of the series came in Wake Forest’s 6-3 win when Chase Burns, No. 16 in the composite rankings, improved to 3-0 and struckout 14 batters in 6.0 innings while allowing just two hits and one run. That game also featured No. 76 prospect Fran Oschell III pitching 2.0 innings in relief for Duke and striking out four of the seven batters he faced.

But Josh Hartle and Michael Massey for Wake Forest, the No. 13 and 31 prospects, did not fare as well. Both entered with impressive numbers, but Hartle allowed 11 hits, six runs– all earned- in 3.2 innings. He threw 96 pitches. Massey hadn’t allowed a run yet this season but gave up three in 2.0 innings and walked four.

Duke ace Jonathan Santucci, also off to a terrific start entering the series, had his worst outing of the year. He threw 70 pitches in 2.2 innings allowed five runs on six hits. No. 9 prospect Seaver King took him deep.

Now that teams are in conference play, there will be more series loaded with prospects, especially in the SEC and ACC, the top two conferences in college baseball.

Here’s a look at the top prospect performances and what to watch for this week.

MLB Draft 2024 Prospect Of The Week: Luke Holman, LSU Baseball

No pitcher, not even Hagen Smith of now No. 1 Arkansas Baseball, has been better than Luke Holman this season.

Holman struck out 10 batters against Xavier last week to give him 40 on the year and he hasn’t allowed a run in 24 innings. He has 40 strikeouts to just four walks.

Holman, an Alabama transfer, has a WHIP of .50. He has allowed just eight hits.

In 40 innings! His 4-0 record is like the fourth or fifth most impressive stat.

Holman is a pitcher that is turning heads and climbing the MLB Draft boards. The No. 35-ranked prospect has become the Tigers’ ace this season.

 Florida prospects:

  • Jac Caglianone, 1B/ LHP
  • Colby Shelton SS/3B
  • Cade Fisher (LHP, 2025)
  • Cade Kurland (2B 2025)

Texas A&M Prospect

  • Braden Montgomery , OF/RHP
  • Jace LaViolette (CF, 2025 Draft)

Jac Caglianone is making a case for the No. 1 pick in the draft. On March 10, he had his best start of the year when threw 6.0 innings of shutout, no-hit baseball and struck out nine against St. Mary's. He also went 1-for-3 from the plate. Texas A&M has a pair of players who will likely be taken in the top 10 of the draft over the next two seasons. Jace LaViolette is in the running to go No. 1 in 2025. Meanwhile Aggie pitcher Ryan Prager is 4-0 and struckout 40 batters in 23.2 innings and may soon find himself in the prospect conversation this season as a redshirt sophomore.
