Oklahoma State Wrestling Tops Iowa State In Key Big 12 Clash

Oklahoma State swept the first three matches and claimed two major decisions late to beat Iowa State 21-12 Saturday night in Stillwater.

Powered by a pair of close victories early and a couple bonus-point wins late, seventh-ranked Oklahoma State took down #5 Iowa State 21-12 Saturday night in Stillwater. 

The Cowboys (10-0) swept the first three bouts and raced out to a 10-0 lead behind wins from Troy Spratley, Daton Fix and Tagen Jamison and then put the dual away late with major decisions from Dustin Plott and Jersey Robb. 

Ninth-ranked Jamison fought off a series of attacks in regulation by #8 Anthony Echemendia before capitalizing on an overtime shot to score a 4-1 win at 141. The win by Jamison launched Oklahoma State out to a 10-0 lead and came on the heels of a 4-2 win by Spratley at 125 and third-ranked Fix’s major decision win against #8 Evan Frost.

The Cyclones (10-2) won three of the next four matches, highlighted by second-ranked David Carr’s 8-1 victory against #3 Izzak Olejnik in the dual’s most-anticipated bout. Carr blasted Olejnik with a double-leg midway through the opening period, scored on a single-leg shot with 40 seconds left in the second and finished both periods on top to cruise to victory, handing Olejnik his second loss of the season.

M.J. Gaitan followed up the Carr win with an overtime bodylock takedown to beat Brayden Thompson 6-3 at 174, cutting the Oklahoma State lead to 13-9. 

But Plott and Robb locked up the dual for the Cowboys. Second-ranked Plott accumulated more than four minutes of riding time in a 17-3 victory against #9 Will Feldkamp at 184 and Robb used a seven-point move late in the first period to score a 15-6 major decision against Julien Broderson at 197.
