Minnesota vs Iowa Wrestling Dual 2024: Match Notes

125: #9 Drake Ayala (Iowa) decision #20 Patrick McKee (Minnesota), 8-5
First period: Ayala attempts a slide by in the first minute but still no score. McKee scored on a double with 27 seconds left in the period and Ayala escaped with 13 seconds left to take a 3-1 lead.

Second period: Ayala chooses bottom and is committed to a tough ride and surpasses one minute of riding time halfway through the period. Ayala escapes with 38 seconds left. Ayala hits a single, switches to a double, and scores with 11 seconds left for a 5-3 lead at the end of the period. 

Third period: McKee chooses bottom and escapes but Ayala scores on a single and covers both ankles for a takedown but McKee escapes. Ayala leads 8-5. Riding time is under a minute for McKee. Stall on Ayala with 13 seconds left. McKee pushes in but can't score. Ayala wins, 8-5.

Iowa 3, Minnesota 0

133: #23 Tyler Wells (Minnesota) decision Kale Petersen (Iowa), 6-3
First period: Ankle pick off of a Peterson shot for a Wells takedown followed by an escape by Petersen. Wells leads, 3-1. 

Second period: Wells chooses bottom and Petersen works hard for near fall points. Petersen takes riding time with over a minute with 46 seconds left in the period. Petersen finishes the period on top with 1:46 of riding after a full ride out. 

Third period: Petersen picks down and escapes with 1:37 left. Wells leads, 3-2. Wells hits a single, switches off to the other leg, and scores with 1:10 left. Well called for stalling but holds a 6-2 lead.  A challenge by the Iowa bench but the call stands. No change. Wells gets riding time under a minute but Petersen escapes for a 6-3 lead in favor of Wells. Stalling on Wells with five seconds left but it doesn't matter. Wells wins, 6-3.

Iowa 3, Minnesota 3

141: #1 Real Woods (Iowa) decision #21 Vance VomBaur (Minnesota), 5-2
First period: Woods hits a high crotch and comes out to the right side with 1:08 elapsed for a 3-0 lead. Woods gets a minute of riding time with 53 seconds remaining. VomBaur escapes with 18 seconds left and is in on a shot but doesn't score. Woods leads, 3-1.

Second period: Woods picks down and escapes in eight seconds for a 4-1 lead. No scoring for the remainder of the period. 

Third period: VonBaur picks down. Escape for VomBaur win 1:44 left. Woods hit a shot followed by a lengthy scramble that lasted 1:40 but no score. Woods wins 5-2 after a riding time point is tabulated. 

Iowa 6, Minnesota 3

149: #14 Caleb Rathjen (Iowa) decision Drew Roberts (Minnesota), 7-3
First Period: High crotch attempt by Rathjen and hooks the leg for a takedown with 1:22 left followed by an escape 14 seconds later. Rathjen leads 3-1 at the end of the first.

Second period: Rathjen picks down and escapes in 28 seconds for a 4-1 lead. Rathjen hits a left-side single and comes out the back door but time expires with no score. Rathjen still leads, 4-1.

Third period: Roberts picks down and escapes in eight seconds. Rathjen leads, 4-2. Ratjen hits a single and switches to a double for a takedown with 1:10 left. Roberts escapes 15 seconds later. Rathjen leads, 7-3. No scoring for the remainder of the period. Rathjen wins, 7-3.

Iowa 9, Minnesota 3

157: #18 Michael Blockhus (Minnesota) decision #2 Jared Franek (Iowa), 5-4
First Period: Straight on double by Franek and scores with 1:20 left. Blockhus scores with a minute left but Franek still leads, 3-1. Blockhus takes a shot but a stalemate is called. 

Second period: Franek picks down and gets to his feet for an escape with 1:24 left for a 4-1 lead. No scoring for the remainder of the period.

Third period: Blockhus picks down and escapes in five seconds to cut the lead in half. Straight on double by Franek and switches off to a single but a stalemate is eventually called. Double by Blockhus with 20 seconds left for a 5-4 lead and rides out for a win. 

Iowa 9, Minnesota 6

165:  #7 Michael Caliendo (Iowa) decision Blaine Brenner (Minnesota), 5-1
First Period: Sweep single by Brenner but Caliendo limp legs out and gets to a two-on-one tie but Brenner gets out and resets with 1:30 to go. No scoring for the remainder of the period. 

Second Period: Caliendo picks down and is out in eight seconds for a 1-0 lead. Reattack by Caliendo and he eventually scores for a 5-0 lead following a technical violation for hands to the face against Brenner. Caliendo rides out the period to maintain his 5-0 lead.

Third Period: Brenner picks down and escapes in eight seconds. Caliendo leads, 5-1. Stalling against Brenner with 26 seconds left. No scoring. Caliendo wins, 5-1.

Iowa 12, Minnesota 6

174: Patrick Kennedy (Iowa) major decision Sam Skillings, 13-2
First Period: Low single by Skilings and comes out the back door but Kennedy holds onto the leg and potentially dangerous called with 1:52 left. Single by Skillings followed by another scramble that is eventually stalemated. Kennedy counters an attack by Skillings and scores a takedown with 24 seconds left. Roll through attempt and Kennedy gets two near fall for a 5-0 lead.

Second Period: Kennedy picks down and escapes in eight seconds for a 6-0 lead. A reattack by Kennedy adds a second takedown and a 9-0 lead. Skillings escapes with 58 seconds left for his first point. No scoring the remainder of the period. Kennedy leads 9-1.

Third Period: Skillings chose down and escapes with 1:38 remaining but Kennedy leads, 9-2. Shot by Skilling but a go-behind by Kennedy for a 13-2 win with riding time.

184: #10 Isaiah Salazar (Minnesota) decision Aiden Riggins (Iowa), 7-0
First Period: Single to the right side and Riggins tried to roll underneath and Salazar scores with 41 seconds left for a 3-0 lead. 

Second period: Salazar escapes in 10 seconds for a 4-0 lead. 

Third period: Riggins picks neutral. Single by Salazar and scores at the end of the period for a 7-0 win.

197:  #25 Zach Glazier (Iowa) decision #26 Garrett Joles (Minnesota), 4-2
First Period: Single by Glazier and scores with 1:25 left for a 3-0 lead. Escape for Joles with 58 seconds left. 

Second Period: Joles picks down and escapes in 1:42 but Glazier leads, 3-2. 

Third period: Glazier picks down and escapes with 1:25 left for a 4-2 lead. No scoring.

First Period: Low single by Kueter with 1:13 left and eventually gets the takedown with 55 seconds left. Tabor escapes with 37 seconds left. Kueter leads 3-1 at the end of the period. 

Second Period: Tabor starts on bottom and Kueter hits a mat return immediately. Tabor escapes with 1:17 left but Kueter still leads, 3-2. 

Third Period: Kueter picks down and a big mat return by Tabor. Kueter grabs the left ankle from underneath and gets a reversal with 1:05 left followed by an escape by Tabor with 49 seconds left. Tabor on a shot but can't score as time expires. Kueter wins, 5-3.
