2023 Fargo By The Numbers: Illinois Outpaces The Field
Which states won team titles and what their new all-time records are at USA Wrestling's Junior and 16U National Championships.
Another Junior and 16U National Championship is in the books, but before all USA Wrestling related eyes turn towards the U17 World Championships and the rest of the summer season, we still have time to squeeze in a look back at which states won Fargo trophies and what the new record books look like.

Illinois Wins The Unofficial 'Overall' Team Title
There are six official team titles (more on those shortly), which are by points earned by wrestlers from state associations that reach the medal round and place in the top eight of each bracket. The entire event has six divisions based on style (men's freestyle, women's freestyle & Greco-Roman) and age level (Junior & 16U).
And then there's the unofficial team title that we just created by adding up all the scores from all six tournaments. Illinois came in first, with Pennsylvania right behind them. The unofficial top 10 states from Fargo are below.

In the points per capita debate, Team Iowa ruled Fargo, with almost double the points per million inhabitants as the next closest state. The top 10 states in points per millio is below.

Pennsylvania Won Two More Unofficial Team Titles
Team PA had an outstanding week in the Gateway City, accruing the most points in both the both men's and women's freestyle tournaments when the two age divisions are combined.
The Keystone State ran away with the unofficial men's freestyle team title, outscoring unofficial runners-up Iowa 393 to 272. In women's freestyle, Team PA squeaked by Illinois 206 to 194 when both age divisions were added up.
Illinois was back on top in Greco, however, as the leg-eschewing grapplers from the Land of Lincoln narrowly defeated Iowa when you added up the points from the two Greco-Roman age divisions.
Idaho Claims An Official Team Title, While PA & IL Gobble Up The Rest
As for those six official titles, Pennsylvania secured three of them. They swept the men's freestyle age divisions and won the 16U girls division. Idado & Illinois split the Greco titles, with Idago snagging the elder trophy and Illinois taking the boys championship. Finally, Illinois earned their second official trophy in the womens Junior division.

More Facts And Numbers From Biggest Fargo Ever
- Illinois remains the top state for Fargo All-Americans in all styles and age groups combined, with 1,816
- California has the second most total AAs with 1,753. PA is third with 1,749.
- PA made up ground on the leaderboard, as it earned the most AAs in 2023 with 62, more than Illinois, who was second with 54, and Cali, who was third in Fargo this year with 51.
- Iowa also broke the half-century mark for AAs in 2023 with an even 50. The Hawkeye State now has 1,062 total AAs, enough to pass Ohio for #5 on the All-Time list. Ohio falls to #6 with 1,057, having added 37 in 2023.
- Minnesota stays in fourth place all-time with 1,202 total AAs after adding 36 new podium placers in 2023.
- Iowa had the most champs in 2023, with 11. Illinois was second with 10. Illinois and Iowa had at least one champ in all six tournaments.
- Iowa breaks into the top 5 for All-Time Fargo Champs with 167. They tie Ohio. The rest of the top 5 is as follows: Illinois - 270, Pennsylvania - 225, California - 212, Minnesota - 189, Ohio - 167
- Jaclyn Dehney became Massachusett's 6th champ of all time when she won the 127 lb girls junior bracket.
- Kentucky had just four champs in history before Jayden Raney added two more when he won 120 lb titles in the 16U Greco and freestyle brackets.
- Tennessee added two titles to bring the Volunteer State's total from 7 to 9 thanks to Piper Fowler in the 16U girls 164 lb bracket and Shamus Regan in the 16U boys freestyle 100 lb bracket.
- Alaska finally broke double digits and sports an even 10 champs all-time courtesy of junior Greco-Roman wrestler Elyle Francisco at 120 lbs.
- Idaho had two champs and 10 All-Americans in the Junior Greco-Roman tournament. This was the first team title Idaho has ever won at Fargo.
- 2023 marked Pennsylvania's 25th 16U men's freestyle title, their 9th junior men's freestyle title, and their 1st girls team title of either age.
- Pennsylvania had 19 All-Americans in the Junior men's freestyle brackets, the most by any state in any of the six tournaments.
- Pennsylvania's 25 16U men's freestyle team titles are the most of all-time, well ahead of Illinois, who has the second most with 9.
- Pennsylvania is 3rd all-time in junior men's freestyle team titles, having just won their 9th. Illinois is first with 14 and Iowa is second with 11.
- Idaho is just the 7th state to win a junior Greco team title. Illinois has dominated, winning 30, the most in Fargo history.
- Illinois is still in second place all-time on the 16U Greco team title leaderboard. Illinois has 10 titles, still 6 behind Pennsylvania.
- Illinois also won their first junior women's freestyle team title, just the fifth state to do so. California has won 16 of the 21 tournaments ever held at Fargo.
- California has also won most of the 16U women's freestyle tournaments, with 9 of the 12 titles in history. PA is just the fourth state to win a championship in that division.
