Roman Bravo-Young To Transfer To Mexico, Sights Set On 57kg Olympic Spot
Roman Bravo-Young will continue his senior-level wrestling career representing Mexico.
Two-time NCAA Champion Roman Bravo-Young has announced his decision to represent Mexico on the international wrestling scene. Bravo-Young, whose grandparents were born in Sonora, Mexico informed FloWrestling of his decision Thursday evening saying:
"I'm honored to represent the country my great grandparents and grandparents come from."
Bravo Young plans to make his debut at Mexican nationals in two weeks but will not be eligible to wrestle at the 2023 World Championships. According to the United World Wrestling transfer rules, Bravo-Young will have to submit his official transfer application in December. He will then be eligible to represent Mexico at international competitions in 2024.
Once the transfer is complete, Bravo-Young will attempt to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics at 57kg. RBY will have two opportunities to qualify for the Olympics. The first will be at the 2024 Pan-Am Olympic Games Qualifier. This event will take place in Acapulco, Mexico on March 15-17 with the top 2 wrestlers at each weight qualifying for the Olympics. The final qualifying tournament will be the World Olympic Qualifier held in Istanbul, Turkiye on May 9-12. The top 3 wrestlers at each weight will earn an Olympic qualification spot.
Originally from Tuscon, Arizona, Bravo-Young was a 4-time undefeated state champion. He also accumulated impressive freestyle credentials winning Fargo titles in 2014 and 2015 before making a Cadet World team in 2016 at 54kg. While wrestling for Penn State, RBY was a three-time finalist and two-time NCAA champion, while earning All-American status all four years. Bravo-Young is certain to make a splash on the international scene and will be a threat against the best in the world at 57 kg.
