2021 NCAA champ and three-time All-American Shane Griffith will transfer to Michigan to wrestle for the Wolverines in his final year of eligibility. The 165-pounder chose Michigan over Rutgers and Iowa, a group of schools that Griffith had narrowed down his choices to earlier this week.

Pat Lanni of NJ.com broke the news in an exclusive Q&A with Griffith Thursday afternoon. Griffith also posted an announcement on his Instagram account

Griffith was an NCAA champ in 2021, an achievement many believed to be instrumental in saving the Stanford wrestling program. The New Jersey native followed that up with a runner-up finish in 2022, and a fifth-place finish in 2023.

With a Stanford master's degree already in hand, Griffith wasn't sure if he wanted to come back to collegiate wrestling for a sixth year. But after a talk with Stanford assistant coach Ryan Deakin, who himself used his sixth year to win an NCAA title, Griffith decided he also wanted another crack at the NCAA Championships.

Michigan head coach Sean Bormet must now decided what to do at 165 & 174, as the Wolverines also return three-time All-American Cam Amine to the lineup. There's a lot to figure out between now and the start of the new season, but the Wolverine's lineup (and their highest NCAA placement) could look like the following:

125: Michael DeAugustino (4th)

133: Dylan Ragusin (R12)

141: Chris Cannon (7th)

149: Chance Lamer (R12)*

157: Will Lewan (5th)

165: Cam Amine (4th)

174: Shane Griffith (1st)

184: Rylan Rogers (redshirt freshman)

197: TBD

285: Lucas Davison (5th)

Michigan has been very active in the portal, with DeAugustino, Cannon and Davison all coming aboard from Big Ten rival Northwestern this off-season. To that point, Chance Lamer has just recently entered the transfer portal, though that does not necessarily mean he won't be back in the lineup next season.
