It was short-lived, but Spencer Lee’s last match may have been the most thrilling 2:53 of a match we’ve seen him wrestle.
Purdue’s 11th ranked Matt Ramos came out firing. He converted an early takedown off a leg attack for a 2-1 lead after Spencer’s escape. Then Spencer wound up in a body lock position where Ramos sprung into action with a lateral drop that put Spencer on his back. Spencer had to fight hard to get off his back and was down 8-1.
Spencer escaped, fired a single and finished, hit a bar-tilt for 4 NF before taking the bar out and pinning Ramos with just 7 seconds remaining in the period. Spencer jumped to his feet fired up as his team and family went nuts on the bench.
Spencer Lee’s senior campaign sits at 7-0 with a 100% bonus rate. Both his matches this weekend ended in a 1st period fall. His next match will be January 12th against Northwestern where he could face All-American Michael DeAugustino.
