Tom Brands Receives Contract Extension
Tom Brands has received a three-year contract extension from Iowa.
The University of Iowa announced today that head coach Tom Brands has received a three-year extension, which now puts him under contract through the 2022-23 season.
Since taking over in the 2006-07 season, Brands has won three national titles and nine team trophies by placing the Hawkeyes in the top four. Additionally, Iowa has led the nation in attendance in all 11 years of the Brands era.
Iowa starts this year ranked 10th, and the Hawkeyes' potential lineup includes seven ranked wrestlers.
In an official press release from the university, Brands said the following:
I'm fortunate to be a part of an institution that is committed to providing a world-class experience to its student-athletes. We have tremendous leadership and I thank (Iowa athletic director) Gary Barta, (deputy AD) Barbara Burke, President Bruce Harreld, and the entire campus community for their continued support of the Iowa wrestling program.
Also included in the announcement was the possibility of a brand new wrestling facility. The facility would be a standalone training center, separate from the Hawkeyes' competition venue at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The athletics department will be conducting a feasibility study on the potential new space.
On the new training center, Brands said this in the release:
There is a great deal of momentum behind this project, and that's a testament to the support and vision of our fans and leadership. We expect to be the best. There is no question. There is no starting point. There is no end. It's a continuous process, and this is the next step in that process.
Back on October 1, 2015, Iowa gave Brands a three-year extension through the 2019-20 season.
