Top UWW University Freestyle Early Matchups
The brackets at the UWW University Freestyle Nationals are enormous. Six of the nine weights being competed this weekend in Akron, Ohio, start off in the round of 128.

We'll highlight here some of the potential explosive matchups we might see in the early rounds. This is just the tip of the iceberg, though. Check out all the brackets, scores, results and matchups, updated live on FLOARENA.

You'll also want to check out Dan Lobdell's "Five Matchups We Want To See At University Nationals" and locate just where we might see those matchups in the brackets.

57kg

NCAA fourth-place finisher and American University 2016 graduate David Terao gets the top seed in the lightest weight class. 2017 NCAA finalist Ethan Lizak of Minnesota gets the No. 2.

We will have to wait until Sunday to see a potential matchup between the top two seeds. In the meantime, be on the lookout for a round of 32 match between Kyle Norstrem of Virginia Tech and Luke Welch of Purdue. Welch has yet to qualify for an NCAA tournament; however, he's been starting on a Big Ten team for the last three years. The Boilermakers senior will be an excellent offseason test for the redshirt freshman Norstrem, and the Hokies faithful will want to tune in.

61kg

You don't have to look far to find an intriguing match up at 61kg. No. 1 seed Taylor LaMont will get a solid match right off the bat when he faces George Carpenter. A rising junior at Penn State, Carpenter has been practicing in one of the most stacked training centers in the country at the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club. LaMont is no slouch, however, and the redshirt freshman for Utah Valley earned his No. 1 seed by placing second at Fargo in freestyle last summer, among many other credentials.

65kg

There are well over 100 entries at 65kg, so if you can't find an interesting matchup in this bracket then you really aren't trying very hard.

The finals could see Oklahoma State's two-time NCAA champ Dean Heil taking on Rutger's three-time All-American Anthony Ashnault. Those two have met three times at the big dance, with Heil coming out on top every year. Before that can take place, however, a whole bunch of other matches needs to happen.

One of those matches could be a round of 16 match between Lehigh's Luke Karam and Minnesota's Tommy Thorn. Karam is a blue-chip recruit for the Mountain Hawks who will be counted on to fill in at either 141 or 149 next year for Lehigh. Thorn is coming off his first All-Amercian season for the Golden Gophers.

70kg

We've got another massive bracket at 70kg, with three-going-on-four-time NCAA All-American Brandon Sorenson at the top of the bracket and NCAA champ Jason Tsirtsis on the bottom.

One of the many excellent round of 128 matchups that we could see is Geo Martinez, an All-American for Boise State who is now at Oklahoma State, and Troy Heilman, a two-time NCAA qualifier for North Carolina.

Also keep an eye out for North Carolina State's Kevin Jack, a two-time All-American who has spent his college career down at 141, a good 13 pounds lighter than 70kg.

74kg

Missouri NCAA finalist Joey Lavallee and Lock Haven's Chance Marsteller could make for a wild 74kg finals. Before that would happen, though, watch out for a potential round of 32 matchup between Rider All-American BJ Clagon and Old Dominion national qualifier Seldon Wright.

80kg

We could a major clash of styles in the finals at 80kg, as Missouri's two-time All-American Daniel Lewis could find himself mixing it up with a cadet Greco-Roman world bronze medalist in Jon Jay Chavez.

Before the finals, we'll get to see Lehigh's Jordan Kutler, who's up a healthy 19 pounds from the weight he wrestled during the 2016-17 NCAA season. He could be tested early on by Indiana's Bryce Martin. We could also get an ultimate New Jersey on New Jersey battle, as Rider's Wayne Stinson could see Princeton Jonathan Schleifer in the round of 64.

86kg

There is plenty of star power at the top of the 86kg seeds, as NCAA champ and two-time All-American Myles Martin of Ohio State headlines the bracket, with North Carolina State's NCAA third-placer Pet Renda not far behind. Martin's first match with Cornell's uber-recruit Max Dean will be a great way to kick off the weight. Renda will also have a stout opponent for his first match of the day with Purdue's Jonathan Morales.

Fellow EIWA wrestlers Ryan Preisch of Lehigh and Alex DeCiantis of Drexel will meet in the round of 64. Both wrestlers are NCAA qualifiers but never faced off against each other before due to being at difference weights in college.

97kg

The 97kg weight class is one of the smallest, most manageable brackets at the University freestyle event, yet still has 58 entries. Cornell's blue-chipper Ben Darmstadt grabbed the No. 1 seed. Darmstadt's future EIWA nemesis, Tom Sleigh of Bucknell, could be a problem for him in the semifinals. Sleigh will have to get by Utah Valley's NCAA qualifier Tanner Orndorff in the round of 64, however, a tall order for almost any wrestler.

125kg

Tanner Hall snagged the No. 1 seed on the strength of a a stellar 2017 NCAA season and by being a two-time junior freestyle national champion back in 2011 and 2012.

Hall will be challenged by EIWA champ Garrett Ryan, who sits in the No. 2 spot. Ryan will likely have to get by Dean Broghammer of the appropriately named Viking Wrestling Club in the round of 32. Dean Broghammer is also a top contender for best name of the 2017 UWW University Freestyle Nationals.
