The Canada Cup is one of the premier international tournaments held in North America every year, and this year’s installation is no exception. The United States sent a handful of its up-and-coming young men and women to the great white north for experience against some of the world’s best.
Rolling through an international field is something that Tyler Graff (NYAC/SKWC) is becoming accustomed to since transferring to the Scarlet Knight Wrestling Club and Regional Training Center. The Canada Cup is the fourth international tournament Graff has won since training on the banks of The Old Raritan, and this time, he out-scored a field that consisted of a Pan-American gold medalist, and went 32-0 in three bouts.
Here's Graff's win over Bray in the final:
The Canadian women’s program is perennially one of the best in the world, which is probably the reason so many of our female athletes made their way north. U.S. Olympic Team Trials finalist Victoria Anthony led the charge by picking up three technically superior shut-outs en route to a perfect 30-0 day securing a win against countrywoman Cody Pfau along the way.
There were a couple Canadian athletes that spent a lot of time stateside making an impact as well; namely, Amar Dhesi. His typical brutish, slick style helped him tech fall his way through his bracket, and yielded only three points along the way.
In case you’re in the mood to follow some foreign-born athletes that have a real chance of making a splash in Rio this August, look no further than the three world/Olympic medalists that Cuba brought to the party. Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez, Livan Lopez, and Salas Perez will bring three golds medals back to Cuba from the 57k, 74k, and 97k weight classes, respectively.
