Last night, Jason Renteria and Justin Mejia shook up the recruiting world as they almost simultaneously decommitted from Iowa through statements on Twitter. “After I tweeted it last night, Jason messaged me and said that he was thinking of doing the same thing,” Mejia said.

The first time around, Illinois state champion Jason Renteria didn’t really get a chance to enjoy the process since he verbally committed to the Hawkeyes after completing his freshman season at Oak Park River Forest.

When he made his initial commitment, Renteria was excited to work with former Iowa NCAA champion Tony Ramos, but that has changed now, too.

“Even after Ramos left he still was fully committed to going to Iowa,” said Jason Sr. on behalf of his son. “He’s pretty upset about not going to Iowa, but he just has to do the right thing for him.”

Now that they are both back on the market, Renteria and Mejia are looking at the recruiting process differently.

“This time he will take his time with the process,” said Jason about his son. “His top five schools are Illinois, Penn State, UNC, Nebraska and Missouri. We will take our visits to those schools and make our decision after that.”

Mejia is in the same boat and is looking at things through a similar lens.

“I’m pretty laid back about everything right now. I’m not really in a hurry to make my decision,” Mejia said. “Everything just happened so I’m not even really thinking about what I’m going to do next. The only two schools I will say I’m talking to right now is Illinois and Minnesota.”

For the three-time California state champion, the Ramos factor wasn’t as much of a deterrent, but he admits it would have been nice to train with him at Iowa.

“I can’t really let one guy force me to make a decision, but it definitely would have been nice to work with him,” Mejia said. “Where ever I go I just want to make sure that I fit into the team and that I like the location. Besides that, I haven’t put much thought into it right now.”
