2021-22 NCAA DI Rankings

A Surtain Shade Of Green

Things we're getting a little too complacent in Rankersville, so the fellas at 125 (and some other weights) decided to surprise with some unexpected results. And here we are, uploading the rankings late Monday night, just as surprised as we were when we caught the early flight home from San Diego.

Malik Heinselman, a three-time qualifier but never an All-American, defeated last year's six-placer Sam Latona. Trevor Mastrogiovani, who advanced 'merely' to the round of 16 at last year's NCAAs, defeated third-placer Pat McKee. Bloodrounder Brody Teske lost to unranked Corey Cabanban of Iowa State at the Daktronics Open. Cabanban then lost to his teammate and fellow Hawaiian Kysen Terukina. All surprises!

Of course, plenty of people will say expected those outcomes. And we applaud their prescient prognostication!

One result that was not quite as surprising but still affected the results was Jack Medley defeating Joe Manchio, which was only a #18 over a #15.

Everyone mentioned who lost fell in the rankings, and everyone who won rose. How far they moved depended on their past results compared to those of their peers. There's a lot of volatility in this weight class, as everyone outside the very top tier has wins and losses against each other, so rankings will be determined by a lot of 'what-have-you-done-for-me-lately' reasoning.

Elsewhere, Liam Cronin took three losses. Two of the victors appear in the rankings for the first time, namely Tanner Jordan and the aforementioned Terukina. The third loss was to Eisch, Minnesota's presumed backup, and that loss does not affect his standings much.

Finally, Caleb Smith defeated Ryan Miller at the Keystone Classic, a tournament that was, for the most part, very beneficial for the Quakers' rankings. Smith appears ready to take over the leadoff spot for the Mountaineers now that Codi Russell is up at 133.
