165: WHOA MariNELLI
Two undefeated men stepped on the mat. Only one left with his unblemished record intact. That man was Alex Marinelli, who upset defending national champion Vincenzo Joseph in dramatic fashion at Penn State in front of the largest indoor wrestling crowd in history. Not too shabby.
Keeping Marinelli from gaining the #1 spot is Isaiah Martinez, who is also undefeated on the year. Martinez and Marinelli have yet to wrestle each other this season, but IMar earns the tiebreaker due to having just two varsity losses in his career, to go along with two national championships and a runner-up finish. Martinez also owns a head-to-head win last season while Marinelli was on redshirt. Whether or not the Big Ten seeding committee sees things the same way come tournament time is another matter entirely.
Elsewhere, Richie Lewis defeated Nick Wanzek. Lewis now has five top 20 wins this season against losses only to the #2- and #3-ranked 165-pounders. As a result, RL Savage moves up to #5.
Additionally, Evan Wick lost to IMar and Isaiah White over the weekend and drops to #7. Wick and Lewis are scheduled to wrestle each other this Friday at 7 PM (live on Flo). It should be a fun one.
