The Iowa Hawkeyes are coming off a fifth-place performance at the 2024 NCAA Championships. They return a good portion of their lineup but will lose key starters in Brody Teske, Real Woods, and Jared Franek. Below is a breakdown of what their lineup will look like next season without those guys.

Below is a partial list of NCAA D1 heavyweight wrestlers (184, 197, 285) who are returning and will contest for a varsity spot after an interval of at least one year.

This fall, Tom Brands will enter his 18th year as head coach of the Iowa Hawkeyes, and his first season in Iowa City as head coach in the post-Spencer Lee era.

Iowa dominated the first day of the inaugural Soldier Salute by sending 13 wrestlers to the semifinals. Three-time NCAA champion Spencer Lee won his first two matches by fall and technical fall and will face U20 World Champion Jore Volk in the semifinals.

It appears that Spencer Lee will compete for the second time this season after the University of Iowa released 29 wrestlers that will compete at the Soldier Salute on December 29-30 in Coralville. Lee made his season debut with a 16-5 major decision over Corey Cabanban during the Iowa State dual on December 4. The Hawkeye senior is seeking his fourth NCAA championship this season.Also included are national place winners Real Woods, Jacob Warner, and Anthony Cassioppi.The full list has 16 attached and 13 unattached wrestlers. Drake Ayala, who replaced Lee last season, will compete unattached.

While the starting lineup won’t get its season started until Sunday afternoon against California Baptist, a strong contingent of Hawkeyes rolled up to the Luther Open to get some matches under their belt.

U20 Nationals (formerly known as UWW Junior Nationals) is one of my favorite age-level tournaments every year. The top high school upperclassmen get to test themselves against the best first or second year college guys who are often hungry to compete coming out of redshirt. the U20 division at the US Open attracts some of the most ambitious high schoolers and young college wrestlers, and the U17 World Team Trials are one of the pinnacles in the sport.
