
A native of Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, Welsh is ranked eighth in the nation as of June 30th, 2021. Welsh has had his fair share of success in the sport going back to his time as a youth when he won a PENNWAY state title in 2016. In 2018, Welsh won the Trinity Hilger Classic and a title at the PAWF cadet freestyle state championships. Welsh repeated his freestyle state title the next year up from 100 to 120 pounds.

After a down year by Tom Ryan standards in 2022, the Buckeyes rebounded in 2023 by bringing home a team trophy from NCAAs. Despite losing valuable senior leadership from Malik Heinselman, Ethan Smith, Kaleb Romero, and Tate Orndorff, Ohio State is in a good position to bring home another trophy this year. On the Senior level, the US Open will set the stage for Final X, but there's plenty to watch at the U17 and U20 divisions as well. The U17 division will conclude with a best-of-three series that will decide the World Team, shake up the high school rankings, and establish some wrestlers' cases to be in Who's Number One.
