A native of Galion, Ohio, Shumate was a runner up at the Fargo junior freestyle national tournament in the summer of 2021. Shumate has been a staple in Ohio wrestling from the youth level up to high school. Shumate won the NUWAY national championships in 2012 and a title at the OHIOWAY Northwest regional in 2013. Shumate was a runner up at the OHIOWAY state championship in 2013 and third at the Ohio youth state championship in 2014. Shumate won a title at the OH-WAY state championships in 2014.

Despite losing valuable senior leadership from Malik Heinselman, Ethan Smith, Kaleb Romero, and Tate Orndorff, Ohio State is in a good position to bring home another trophy this year. While Jesse Mendez is planning to Olympic redshirt, this will be the debut season for a lot of the loaded 2022 #1 overall recruiting class.
