In his first trip to the big dance, Courtney was an NCAA finalist for the Arizona State Sun Devils as a redshirt junior. Courtney returns to the Sun Devils for the 21-22 season looking to not only help lead Arizona State to a team trophy, but hoping to build on his finals run as well. Courtney hails from Goodyear, Arizona and was a three - time Arizona state champion at Desert Edge high school. Courtney became the full time starter at Arizona State during his redshirt sophomore season. During this time, Courtney notched wins over three wrestlers ranked in the top 25 and climbed all the way up to the seventh ranking in the nation after starting out ranked 24th in the preseason rankings.

The plan was simple, Figueroa would redshirt, and Courtney would finish his senior year then hand the torch to Richie. Things got more complicated when the NCAA granted an extra year of eligibility and extended Courtney's career into the 2022-2023 season.
