It’s an Olympic year! Or very nearly an Olympic year. Paris 2024 will be here before we know it, and we need to figure out who Team USA’s men’s freestyle Olympians will be.

Below is a list of every men's freestyle wrestler that is qualified for the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament on May 20 - 21 and how they qualified. The World Team Trials will take place September 11-12 to determine the team that will compete in Oslo, Norway October 2-10. In this article we’ll explore what the top 8 seeds might look like for the competitors at 61kg in men’s freestyle.

Andy Hamilton warned us just prior to the 2021 Olympic Trials, “Trials History Says Expect Something Unexpected.” However, most or all these things almost nobody could have predicted. That’s part of what made this Olympic Trials and every World/Olympic Team Trials so memorable. The things we never saw coming.

The unpredictable occurring at Olympic Trials is nothing new.  In 2016 Frank Molinaro and J’den Cox made the team out of the 9 seed.  Jake Deitchler was still in high school and made the 08 team in Greco. 

The 2021 US Olympic Trials go down this weekend. All the action will be streamed either through NBC Sports Network or NBC's Peackock streaming service. Meanwhile, we'll have a watch party live throughout the trials to keep wrestling fans in the loop. Olympic Trials week is finally here! Before official seeds come out later in the week, I wanted to take my best guess at how the seeding committee will see things. 

Only a few wrestlers have competed since March when COVID-19 shut down most events around the world. Even fewer have competed internationally. That changes for a big squad from team USA as they'll travel to France for the Henri Deglane Grand Prix of France. Fans can watch it live on FloWrestling.

We're entering into a phenomenal era of US wrestling. More and more athletes are able to wrestle for a living full time post college and the RTC structure has been a big reason for this. The recent RTC Cup was a success and hopefully laid the ground work for similar events in the future. It also had me reminiscing about the wild time this spring and summer when it seemed like every other day a major athlete was transferring from one RTC to another. 

Earlier this morning, the Cyclone Regional Training Center released news in a tweet that World Bronze Medalist Joe Colon would be moving to Ames to continue his competition career. The Iowa native will add serious firepower for the lightweights in the room. Check out the release from the Cyclone RTC below.

Seth Gross and Joe Colon met at the US Open and then again at the US World Team Trials in 2017. Colon won both matches, but the results of those matches weren't nearly as interesting as the action that took place. In 12 minutes of wrestling, Colon and Gross hung an incredible 44 points on the board.
