Team USA sent a small but strong women’s team to the prestigious UWW Matteo Pellicone in Rome, Italy. When it was all over, U.S. women earned three gold medals, with 50 kg Victoria Anthony, 59 kg Abby Nette, and 68 kg Tamrya Mensah-Stock all reaching the top of the podium. This event was the first Ranking Series tournament of 2021 and usually has competitive depth as it plays heavily toward seeding at the World Championships.

Only a few seconds had expired after the mat chairman yelled “Stop!” when Peyton Walsh rose to his feet and hurriedly tried to make his exit. They don’t just let you walk away, either in victory or defeat. Mandatory post-match rituals do not change based on outcome, nor are they adjusted depending upon the demeanor of the participants. Walsh, who had just been gutted out in :41 by well-traveled and decorated vet Ashkat Dilmukhamedov of Kazakhstan, just wanted to get the forced handshake over with and head to the back where it would become permissible to fully embrace his exasperation.

Nick Suriano has long been known as a good wrestler, but for the most part that success has been seen in folkstyle. It was not until after he won his NCAA title in 2019 that we saw him really take to freestyle.

As we start to wind down the NCAA wrestling season, we start to ramp up the international styles leading toward the Olympic Trials, the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, to be held in 2021 and the 2021 World Championships.

It has been roughly 2 years since we’ve had an installment of the Jordan Burroughs Frank Chamizo rivalry. In that time a lot has happened, but let’s take a look at where the rivalry stands right now.

The first “Ranking Series” event of the season is finally on the doorstep and tournament points are hardly a concern. Though, they will matter, eventually. Once the dust settles following the US Olympic Trials (and subsequent World OG Qualifier in Bulgaria), topics such as World rankings and potential seeding in Tokyo will nudge their way into conversations. But, not yet.
