Once again Canon-McMillan played host to a weekend filled with megastars, fresh faces, wild finishes, high drama, shocking upsets and perhaps a very real claim to the number one pound-for-pound ranking. Day one showed why Powerade is one the very best high school tournaments in the country, featuring some of the brightest stars in the sport, a few crazy upsets, and the best 170 pound bracket you will likely find all year. 

For those that have survived the early rounds of Powerade and made it to the quarterfinals this evening, we salute you. It has been a fun morning and afternoon filled with dominant stars and emerging new faces and the occasional busted bracket, along with a packed gym swimming in the sounds of screaming moms and grandmas jumping up and down matside. It is everything a holiday tournament in Western Pennsylvania should be and it is about to get really real up in here, starting at 7:30 tonight. As the quarters kick in, these are the matches you simply can’t miss.

One of the true joys of high school wrestling is the annual holiday tournaments that take place the weekend after Christmas. Keeping the kids disciplined with their weight management and creating unique travel situations, you can occasionally get wild results, but you are always assured of furious action as the top stars are in fine form having shaken off any early season jitters and looking to close the year out with a big statement in front of family and friends. The king of those holiday tournaments is Powerade at Canon-McMillan just outside Pittsburgh, deep in the hotbed of Pennsylvania wrestling. With a deep history of incredible matches and a heated atmosphere fueled by intense in-state rivalries, it is the high school tournament to tune into as you work off that two-pound allowance.
