A native of Boilingbrook, Illinois, McGee attended Plainfield East high school where he was a three time finalist and two time Illinois state champion. McGee attended Old Dominion University where he won a MAC title making him an  NCAA qualifier as a true freshman at 125 pounds. McGee went 30-10 as a true freshman and made his debut in the rankings on February 19th of 2018 at number 20. McGee was an NCAA qualifier once again at 125 for his sophomore season winning his second MAC title in the process. McGee opened up in the rankings at 17th and was ranked as high 13th during the year.
