For some time now the topic in major team sports leagues has been the formation of super teams and what they can accomplish. With the movement in coaching this summer the question should now arise: what about coaching super staffs in college wrestling? Some may come easily to mind but there are more than you may think.

North Carolina State star Hayden Hidlay will enter what could possibly be his last NCAA wrestling tournament this weekend with a sparkling resume nearly unmatched in his program’s history.

NCAA wrestling isn’t the only thing going down this weekend. The first UWW Rankings Series event is here and it’s going to be fun. With this tournament going towards the 2021 World Championship seeding, a lot of the big guns are coming out.

At a press conference today, [p:Cael Sanderson] said he does not expect [p:Greg Kerkvliet] to wrestle for [t:Penn State] this season. The news was reported on Twitter by The Daily Collegian.

The Penn State coaching staff has discovered a formula for wrestling success that has been unmatched in the last decade, and while that top-secret formula may never see the light of day, one thing that sets Penn State apart is the composition of the coaching staff itself.

After the FRL crew ranked the top five Penn State wrestlers of all-time, many, many people from all over were asking for the one, true, correct ranking. Rader's ranking. Ask no more wrestling fans, here it is. 

I've been quite skeptical of the claim that coaches can be skilled at "peaking," meaning that some coaches are able to get comparatively more out of their team at the NCAA tournament than the peers, but a fresh deep dive into the numbers has got me rethinking my view on the subject. I now believe that there is evidence that Cael Sanderson is better at "peaking" than other coaches in the NCAA.

Cael Sanderson is already up there with the greatest NCAA coaches of all time, and at just 40 years old, he still has a lot of coaching years in front of him. Through 14 seasons as a head coach (three at Iowa State and 11 at Penn State), Cael already has eight team titles, 25 AAs, and 73 individual national championships.

Nobody got the ending they wanted from the 2019-20 season. Covid-19 canceled the NCAA Championship Tournament, truncating a superb season before it could be properly concluded. But that doesn't mean we can't honor the extraordinary efforts the student-athletes put forth on the mat.
